By "silencing" these genes, we re-engineer the plant to be resistant to that disease instead. Recently we developed an RNAi gene silencing strategy for soybeans that will allow us to knock out the expression of any specific gene and evaluate its relative importance in disease resistance. This is a breakthrough, especially since soybeans have historically been difficult to study using molecular genetic tools.
