"Analayticity Reconsidered" by Paul Boghossian

To appear in Nous , August 1996 Analyticity Reconsidered 1 Paul Artin Boghossian New York University I This is what many philosophers believe today about the analytic/synthetic distinction: In his classic early writings on analyticity -- in particular, in "Truth by Convention," "Two Dogmas of Empiricism," and "Carnap and Logical Truth" -- Quine showed that there can be no distinction between sentences that are true purely by virtue of their meaning and those that are not. In so doing, Quine devastated the philosophical programs that depend upon a notion of analyticity -- specifically, the linguistic theory of necessary truth, and the analytic theory of a priori knowledge. Quine himself, so the story continues, went on to espouse far more radical views about me Read More

Philosophy and Cognitive Science Cognitive Turn and Linguistic Turn Jean-Michel Roy University of Bordeaux jmroy@ext.jussieu.fr ABSTRACT: My first goal is to question a received view about the development of Analytical Philosophy. According to this received view Analytical Philosophy is born out of a Linguistic Turn establishing the study of language as the foundation of the discipline; this primacy of language is then overthrown by the return of the study of mind as philosophia prima through a second Cognitive Turn taken in the mid-sixties. My contention is that this picture is a gross oversimplification and that the Cognitive Turn should better be seen as an extension of the Linguistic one. Indeed, if the Cognitive Turn gives explicit logical priority to the study of mind over the study Read More

Analytic philosophy, by Roger Jones

Analytic Philosophy To analyse means to break something down into its constituent parts. Analytic philosophy attempts to clarify, by analysis, the meaning of statements and concepts. Analytic philosophy has been important in the in the English speaking academic world since the beginning of the 20th century. Following Kant a split occurred between Anglo-American academic philosophy and the philosophy practised on the European continent. 'Continental' philosophy took off in an Idealist direction with Hegel, took an existentialist turn via Nietzsche and Heidegger and entered a less certain phase with post-structuralism. Analytic philosophers on the other hand, saw the German philosopher Gottlob Frege (1848-1925) as the most important thinker since Kant. Frege wanted to put a rigorous logic at Read More

Andrews, Philosophy after Analytic Philosophy

ON READING PHILOSOPHY AFTER ANALYTIC PHILOSOPHY © Floy E. Andrews fdoull@morgan.ucs.mun.ca "It is already some years since I was struck by the multitude of falsehoods that I had accepted as true from my childhood, and how doubtful was the whole edifice I had afterward built on them." Descartes, Meditation I. 1 We have grown accustomed to the censure and abuse of the philosophic sages of former times, especially from our contemporaries in Anglo-American philosophy. It is no longer shocking to read of Kant's achievement, "Like all great pioneering works in philosophy the Critique is full of mistakes and confusions...the Critique still has much to teach us, but it is wrong on nearly every page" (1) ; or of Aristotle, "[he], like Adam, began right, but soon wandered into a wrong path, with dis Read More
