They may argue, talk back, disobey, and defy parents, teachers, and other adults. Oppositional behavior is often a normal part of development for two to three year olds and early adolescents. However, openly uncooperative and hostile behavior becomes a serious concern when it is so frequent and consistent that it stands out when compared with other children of the same age and developmental level and when it affects the child's social, family, and academic life. ????????????? To my Childrens Page ? ? Why this subject is important too me I have a child who is suffering from a behavioral disorder. No one knows much about problems like this in children so young. My girl is only 6. It has been suggested that she has: ADD/ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and even Bipolar. Yet no one has been able to diagnosis her for sure. When children are so young and have problems it seems that all the so called professionals just play a guessing game. ? ? ? ? Right now there are not to many answers out there. When you have a child that doesn't act right and is very young, people just assume that you are not disciplining them right. It is very hard to get people to believe that you are doing things right. ? Once you do get a doctor to believe you the next proble Read More

Advice to Parents "Advice to Parents" is a new addition to the IAY website and is aimed at providing parents with valued information about parenting based on research findings. This column is prepared by Dr. Jalal Shamsie, Professor of Psychiatry, University of Toronto and will be updated every few months. Does your child have a "difficult temperament"? Every child or adult for that matter has their own unique temperament. This term refers to their individual style of behaviour; it typically involves traits such as activity level, mood, intensity, adaptability and persistence. There is a great deal of variability amongst children. About 10 to 20% of children have what would be called "difficult" temperament (Webster-Stratton 1992). Difficult means necessitatin Read More

Oppositional

Votes:0
Children and adolescents with this problem usually exhibit a pattern of defiant and disobedient behavior, including resistance to authority figures. However, this behavior pattern is not as severe as conduct disorder. The behavior pattern may include recurrent temper problems, frequent arguements, especially with adults, and evidence of anger and resentment. Additionally, the defiant child or adolescent will often try to annoy others, and will become easily annoyed by others. When mistakes are made, he/she will almost always blame others, avoiding taking responsibility for mistakes. Active defiance of adult authority is common, and the child or adolescent may also display vindictive behavior. The child may be stubborn and unwilling to compromise, but you will usually not see the more sever Read More

Oppositional Defiant Disorder - European Description

Web www.adders.org adders.org - Information Oppositional Defiant Disorder The ICD-10 Classification of Mental and Behavioural Disorders World Health Organization, Geneva, 1992 F91.3 Oppositional Defiant Disorder This type of conduct disorder is characteristically seen in children below the age of 9 or 10 years. It is defined by the presence of markedly defiant, disobedient, provocative behaviour and by the absence of more severe dissocial or aggressive acts that violate the law or the rights of others. The disorder requires that the overall criteria for F91 be met: even severely mischievous or naughty behaviour is not in itself sufficient for diagnosis. Many authorities consider that oppositional defiant patterns of behaviour represent a less severe type of conduct disorder, rather than a Read More
