The Sandinista and Contra rebel fighting began in the late 1970's , and that conflict has caused a serious level of economic turmoil. The year round climate is tropical with moderate highlands central and northwest. Managua, a city of 685,000, is the capital. The official language is Spanish and the currency is the New Cordoba . The total population (1999 estimate) was 4.7 million, with approximately 89 people per square mile. Besides aid from the USA, exports of coffee is the major revenue producer.
