But after its orbit was better determined it was clear that it was not a comet but more like a small planet. Piazzi named it Ceres, after the Sicilian goddess of grain. Three other small bodies were discovered in the next few years (Pallas, Vesta, and Juno). By the end of the 19th century there were several hundred. Several hundred thousand asteroids have been discovered and given provisional designations so far. Thousands more are discovered each year. There are undoubtedly hundreds of thousands more that are too small to be seen from the Earth . There are 26 known asteroids larger than 200 km in diameter. More than 4,700 near-Earth asteroids have been found to date, a fraction of the suspected total population. An estimated 700 of these are large enough to produce global disaster if they were to hit Earth. Make an impact--support our NEO Fund today. A mountain of rock and iron is hurtling toward Earth-- your help is needed now. Like an oncoming train, the asteroid Apophis is headed toward Earth. In 2029, it will come closer to our surface than some of our own orbiting weather satellites. If it shifts just a few hundred kilometers--a fraction of a degree--Apophis could very well return in 2036 to slam into Earth and create widespread devastation. It's just one of 4,70 Read More
