Due to popular demand - and because we always like to bring you the pages YOU want to see - Here is the "Castles of Scotland" section. Over the next few weeks and issues, we will add a castle to this section. Don't worry! it's not the boring old 'here's a castle, and here's where and when it was built' kind of thing, oh no! We are determind to bring you not that, but some historic facts and features surounding each castle that we feature. The grandeur of solitude that surrounds ancient castles in the Highlands is awesome, writes Leonella Longmore , in her book Land of Castles , published by the Inverness Courier newspaper. The book is an introduction to 16 lesser-known yet fascinating strongholds within easy driving distance of the Highland capital - ruinous and surviving castles not on th Read More

Castles of Scotland Scotland has many wonderful old castles and I wish that I could visit each and every one of them. But, since I cannot, then perhaps this is one way to go about at least having a "virtual" visit. Hope you enjoy! Buchanan Castle The Buchanan castle was built by the 4th duke of Montrose after the Buchanan House was destroyed by fire in 1852. The duke comissioned William Burn to design a new home on higher ground. The castle was completed in 1855. After the death of the 5th Duke of Montrose in 1925, the Castle was sold to the Grahams. It was used as a hotel for a short time in the 1930s and was used as a military hospital during the second world war. It's best known patient was Rudolph Hess who was treated for injuries sustained while parachuting into Scotland. The roof was Read More

These range from the most impressive and powerful of structures like Windsor and Dover Castles to worn earthworks that are all that are now left of sites such as Burwell Castle. There is also information on 250 of the mainly 18th and 19th century coastal forts and gun batteries that still stand around the south coast. The first stone fortifications were constructed by the Romans in the 1st Century, and they were so well built that many of the walls are still standing. Castles of Britain

Castles of Britain An insight into past times Britain is strewn with ruins of castles, rubble from the centuries of her existence. Castles are tangible relics of a remarkable past, a lengthy heritage etched in stone, as well as with the blood and sweat of those who built, labored, fought, and died in their shadow. Ruins stir up in us a profound awareness of those past lives. Castles have a timelessness that is awe-inspiring. That they have endured centuries of warfare and the effects of weather is a testimony to the creativity and power of their medieval owners. How many of us will have such long-lasting success? Castles Unlimited was formed in recognition of the necessity to preserve these relics of history. We are dedicated to the promotion and study of British Castles. Our goals are edu Read More

Devizes Castle on the Web

Devizes Castle Home Page Welcome to the Devizes Castle Web Site Devizes Castle in Wiltshire, England stands on the site of a mediaeval 11th century wooden castle. After the destruction of the wooden castle in 1113, it was rapidly rebuilt in stone by the Viceroy Bishop Roger who spent "great and incalculable sums on it". This stone castle was destroyed in 1645 when Oliver Cromwell's army bombarded the castle using a battery of guns in the nearby Market Square. At the start of the 18th century, two windmills were erected on the site, grinding at different times rape seed for oil and tobacco snuff. During the early 19th century, the South windmill was demolished to clear the site for the present South Tower. Then in the 1860s the building was expanded as far as the North windmill which was in Read More

FERNIEHIRST CASTLE Located about 1.5 miles south of Jedburgh, on a minor road east of the A68, east of the Jed Water Ferniehirst Castle consists of an extended and altered towerhouse, which incorporates the cellars from the 16th century castle, with larger wings and extentions. A large conical-roofed stairturret is corbelled out above the first floor level, and bartizans, with shot-holes crowning the top of the tower. The original entrance leads to a stair known as the 'Left-Handed Staircase', the story being that when Sir Andrew Kerr, who was himself left-handed, returned from Flodden in 1513 he had his followers trained to use their weapons with their left hands. This is said to be the origin of 'Corrie-fisted' or 'Kerr handed'. The basement is vaulted, and the hall has a 16th-century fi Read More

Scottish Castles The early years of Scotland's often troublesome history are partly concealed in the mists of time, and historians are unsure about some of the events which took place. From the beginning of time man's inability to live in peaceful co-existence with his neighbours has led to the need for him to build defences to protect himself and those in his care against a sometimes hostile world. The Scottish countryside is as rich as anywhere in Europe with mighty fortresses and fortified towerhouses providing concrete evidence of such endeavours. Strathclyde Region [Still In Preparation] xx Craignethan Castle (Ordnance Survey Map grid reference: 71 NS 815 463) Situated about 4.5 miles (7 km) WNW of Lanark and 8 miles (13 km) SE of Hamilton. It is about 2 miles (3.5 km) NE of junctions 9 and 10 at Kirkmuirhill on the M74 motorway. The castle was built on a ridge above the river Nethan. As with many Scottish castles the oldest part is a tower house. In this case it dates from about 1530 and was built by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, Master of Works to King James V. The Hamilton family took sides with Mary Queen of Scots in the civil war after her abdication in 1567 and she spent some time at Craignethan castle in 1568. By 1579 her faction had been defeated and the castle's defences were largely destroyed on official orders. A featur Read More

Rochester - History Rochester Castle Rochester's Norman Legacy No one can miss the great square keep of the Castle as it towers above the River Medway, a daunting reminder of the history of the City. It was on this site that the Romans originally built the first fort to guard the bridge which connected the Imperial Route of Watling Street, leading from London to Dover . Many centuries later in 1087, Bishop Gundulf began construction of the Castle. The stark drama of this ancient and imposing castle makes it well worth a visit in any season. Originally founded in 604 by Bishop Justus, Rochester Cathedral is the second oldest in England and a regular place of pilgrimage for historians and worshippers alike. Between the years 604 and 1080 it was rebuilt by Bishop Gundulf. The nave and parts o Read More
