Arctic Wolf

Votes:0
Arctic Wolf Canis lupus arctos Smaller and lighter than the southern wolves, the arctic wolf ranges year-round over most of the islands in Canada's Arctic. Roaming singly or in small packs, wolves hunt co-operatively using strategy to outwit the swift caribou, their major prey species. A large wolf can bring down and kill an adult caribou with a single crushing bite to the neck. Survival of pups depends on food supply and many die young, thus, wolf numbers are adjusted to fit the availability of prey. Though wolves were once shot on sight at Arctic bases, now only the Inuit hunters kill them. The furs are sold or used for parka trim. Home Discover Nature! BACK Mammal Species of the World's Boreal Forests BIRDS Canis lupus albus Tundra Wolf See Gray Wolf for description. Although they are called by different names in Canada, Alaska, Scandinavia and Russia, most northern wolves are considered to be a single species of Gray wolf Canis lupus. The gray wolf is the largest living member of the family Canidae. Largest individuals tend to occur in the northern forests of North America, with weights of 79 kg having been recorded. A weight of 45 - 57 kg is much more typical, however. The specimen on the right is a tundra wolf Canis lupus albus, found in the boreal forests of western Russia and northern Scandinavia. Gray wolves from warmer and drier parts tend to be somewhat smaller. In general, there is a wide size range among the various "subspecies Read More

The timberwolf lives in the wooded, subartic, and forest regions of northern Asia, Europe, and North America. Whenever large numbers of people settled into the wolves' habitat they destroyed the wolves. Predator/Prey Timberwolves like to eat many more animals than they can catch. Gray Wolf ( Canis lupus ) NOTE: This "biologue" was published in June 1998. For further information, please see the Grey Wolf Recovery pages and the Grey Wolf information on the Endangered Species site. Historically, most Native Americans revered gray wolves, trying to emulate their cunning and hunting abilities. However, wolves became nearly extinct in the lower 48 states in the early part of the 20th century because settlers believed wolves caused widespread livestock losses. Constantly persecuted and targeted by large scale predator eradication programs sponsored by the federal government, wolves have been pursued with more passion and determination than any other animal in U.S. history. By the time wolves were finally protected by the Endangered Species Act of 1973, they had been exter Read More

My Small Little Wolf Page "Dances With Wolves" I have never danced with wolves but I have had the rare privilege to be face greeted by two male wolves, Nira and Ingo. They live at WOLF TIMBERS in Bolivar, Ohio. My two friends and I are sponsoring the female wolf, Keeley. The general public are not allowed in with the wolves. You can only see them if you make an appointment ahead of time so they know you are coming and you sponsor one of their wolves for a year. It was well worth it to us to have this rare opportunity to see how beautiful these animals are close up and watch them interact with each other. And we are also helping the fac Read More

Wolf

Wolf Canis lupus The wolf has been associated with Northern Hemisphere people for centuries, and remains, even today, a creature of folklore and superstition. The coloration of wolves varies greatly from snow white to coal black and all the intermediate degrees of cream, grey, and brown. A large male wolf may measure over 2 m in total length and stand almost 1 m high at the shoulders. Their weight can vary from 26 to 80 kg. The largest wolves are found in northwestern Canada. These animals have a well-developed social hierarchy. The pack leader is usually the largest and strongest dog and is followed in rank by younger or senile males, then the leader's mate, the other females, and finally the pups in order of strength. All members of the pack accept responsibility for the young, and care Read More

As a result, Asian and American populations have not evolved separately for long enough to become dist Read More
