African Wild Dog

African Wild Dog Lycaon pictus Endangered Although similar in appearance to hyenas, African wild dogs are nevertheless true wild canidae. They are a mixture of black, yellow, and white in such a wide variety of patterns that no two individuals look exactly alike. African wild dogs are widely distributed across the African plains but they do not live in jungle areas. They are social animals, living in packs of usually from 2 to 45 individuals. A hierarchy exists within the pack, but the animals are so friendly to one another that the pecking order is hard to determine. The young and the infirm are given special privileges within the pack. African wild dogs use their sense of sight, not smell, to find their prey. They pay no attention to wind direction and they do not use cover when approach Read More

Conservation Spotlight African Wild Dogs Exerpted from S. Rotz Mamakos, AZA Communique, Dec 1996 Once numbering in the hundreds of thousands, the African wild dog ( Lycaon pictus ) is now one of the African continent's most endangered animals. It is believed that fewer than 5,000 wild dogs currently exist in the wild, and their range has declined from 33 to 15 countries. The largest populations exist in Botswana, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. The initial population reduction came during the early part of the century as a result of a very successful extermination campaign led by ranchers who feared the loss of livestock. Today, the effects of diseases (e.g., rabies, canine distemper, and parvovirus) spread by domestic dogs are having an even more devastating effect on wild dog numbers. Of addition Read More

Enviro Facts - African Wild Dog

24) AFRICAN WILD DOG The African wild dog, also known as the Cape hunting dog, is Africa's most endangered carnivore. The term endangered means that it is in danger of extinction and unlikely to survive if the factors causing its decline in numbers continue. Its endangered status is the result of direct persecution by people. The African wild dog is a gregarious, pack-living animal with behaviour similar to that of the well known wolf of the northern hemisphere. The wild dog has a similar role in nature to that of the wolf in that it removes weak and unhealthy animals from the prey population. Like the wolf, the wild dog has been persecuted unrelentlessely. The African wild dog is a slim, long-legged animal about the size of an Alsatian dog. Its coat is a dappled combination of tan, black Read More

African Wild Dog Project AfricanWildDogProject@comcast.net Status IUCN African Wild Dog Project The African Wild Dog Project is dedicated to the conservation of one of Africa's rarest carnivores, the African wild dog (also known as the painted and Cape hunting dog.) Where once they occurred throughout Africa and numbered hundreds of thousands, there are now fewer African wild dogs than there are cheetahs. The Species Survival Commission of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) estimates that in the whole of Africa there are only 5,000 to 6,000 wild dogs in 600 to 1,000 packs. The African Wild Dog Project, through educational programs and field studies in Africa, is working to conserve these remaining groups. Lions and hyenas are natural predators, and take their toll on African wild dogs. Bu Read More

New Guinea Singing Dog Conservation Society - Welcome!

NGSDCS@CanineWorld.com The New Guinea Singing Dog (NGSD) was discovered by the outside world in 1957 when the first pair was brought down from the New Guinea Highlands to the Taronga Zoo. Sidney, Australia. Originally declared a unique species, canis hallstromi, in 1969 they were grouped with the Australian Dingo as a feral wild (wild-living) subspecies of the domestic dog, Canis familiaris dingo. Because of this most zoos stopped breeding them, and their captive population has subsequently declined. In the last few years, many NGSDs have, with proper training and socialization, adapted well to living in the modern home as a pet. This is quite a feat for a wild animal that until recently was tamed (but not domesticated) companion only to Stone Age tribes. Until the NGSD is once again offic Read More

Well, for some, Wild Dog is often used negatively. Wild Dog is not someone's pet gone wild but a legitimate term used to describe two of the most endangered carnivores in the world. The Wild Dog Foundation was formed with the intention of bringing notice to two greatly neglected carnivores. This will be done by education and with the hopes of raising funds for research projects. The Wild Dog of Africa (Lycaon Pictus) and the Dhole (Cuon Alpinus) of Asia are two forgotten carnivores in the popular world of conservation. They are often ignored along with other mi Read More
