Murphy Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California Davis by Sean Henahan, Access Excellence The announcement by British health authorities that bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, pictured in medulla of cow, left), also known as mad cow disease, may have been transmitted to humans has led to a chaotic situation in the UK with ripple effects occurring throughout Europe and the rest of the world. What is BSE and what is its relation to scrapie in sheep and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans? How did the current epidemic begin? I asked Frederick A. Stanley Prusiner

Stanley Prusiner, M.D. Stanley Prusiner, M.D., a neurobiologist at the University of California at San Francisco, was awarded the 1997 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his groundbreaking discovery and definition of a new class of disease-causing agents called prions (pronounced pree-ons). The Nobel Prize, is the most prestigious award given for research in medicine. Dr. Prusiner's award is the culmination of 25 years of sometimes controversial research on the prion, a natural human protein that, under certain conditions, can interact with other prion proteins, ultimately forming harmful deposits in the brain. The American Health Assistance Foundation (AHAF) has awarded more than $1.2 million in research grants through its Alzheimer's Disease Research program to Dr. Prusiner to develop his prion Read More

You'd be MAD to eat COW!

Votes:0
You'd be mad to eat cow ! On Wednesday the 20th of March, the UK government finally admited that eating beef can kill you. They conceded that the most likely explaination for a new strain of CJD^ (an incurable brain disease that kills humans) is that the infective agent present in BSE* (an incurable brain disease that kills cows) infected cattle had been passed into the human food chain and eaten by humans. Of course the evidence has suggested this for years but protecting the meat, diary and farming industry has until now, apparently been more important to the UK government than informing the public of the possible risks. Despite the admission that BSE and CJD are almost certainly linked, the government is STILL claiming that British beef is 'safe' to eat because of regulations introduced Read More
