What bird wears a black cap, has sideburns, a blue beak, yellow feet and can fly over 200 miles per hour? This sounds like a bird from a crazy detective or superhero cartoon, but it actually describes a cunning and powerful bird that can strike and capture other birds in mid-air! This bird is called the peregrine (pair-a-grin) falcon, and it is endangered in Wisconsin. Today, there are only seven nesting pairs (as of 1997) that can be found around Wisconsin. They nest in areas with tall structures such as smokestacks and power plants on the lower part of the Mississippi River in Wisconsin, around the Door County peninsula, and tall skyscrapers in cities like Madison a Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 (Falco columbarius) The family Falconidae comprises 58 species, of which the true falcons are especially fast, strong fliers. The upper bill has one or more horny "teeth" which facilitate the tearing of flesh. Seven species breed in North America. True falcons have long pointed wings and long tails and are among the fastest-flying birds in the world. They mainly inhabit open country, and many pursue birds on the wing. The Merlin, Falco columbarius , is the smallest of the European falcons. In America the American Kestrel is smaller. The adult male is about 11 inches long, slate-bluegrey above, with red-brown, heavily streaked underparts and an almost white throat. The Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) is15-21" long and has a wingspan of 36-44". The crown and nape are black; a black wedge extends below the eye, forming a distinctive helmet, which is absent in the smaller Merlin and similar Prairie Falcon. The plumage varies from pale to very dark depending on the bird's location. Intermediate form of the west once ranged the continent. The immature Peregrine is dark brownish above, its underparts are heavily streaked. In flight the absence of contrasting axillaries and wing coverts distinguishes all Peregrines from Prairie Falcons. The plumage of the peregrine is reflective of the environment in the sense that the coloring serves more of a predatory purpose and not one of display of brilliant or elaborate of color, which reduces the chance of being notice. Bob Rozinski and Wendy Shattil had access to a private ranch and were photographing water birds at the location. The kite showed up on several occasions and they observed it feed on crayfish. Fortunately, they were able to take several photos of the bird . There is only one previous accepted Texas record of this species from 1977 at Lake Alice. Votes:0 The Peregrine Falcon Why is it endangered? One reason the Peregrine Falcon is considered an endangered species is because of pesticides like DDT. DDT can result in the eggshell thinning, breaking of the egg shell, small amount of hatching ratio, smaller sizes and less breeding. Man is also a factor because nests are being destroyed by cities that keep on expanding. Man also intrudes on breeding sites which causes lower birth ratio. Habitat: There are three places where the Peregrine Falcon lives: 1. The nest areas: you will usually find a Peregrine Falcon's nest on a cliff or around large buildings. 2. It's territory: its territory is the area in which it can protect the nest which also corresponds to number 3. 3. The home range: the home range is the area which it hunts within. Votes:0 The Peregrine Falcon [Falco peregrinus] Unlike the other species that I researched on the WEB, the Peregrine Falcon is treated with seriousness almost everywhere I visited. Perhaps this is because Peregrines, the worlds swiftest birds, are endangered in Canada and in many places in the United States. Like the Whooping Crane, the Peregrine Falcon connects people throughout Canada and the United States, but even moreso, in the cause of protecting and reestablishing them. And, uniquely, there are pages to visit that show live viewing of their nesting sites in several North American cities. I also found that there are many centres in Canada and the United States devoted to the recovery of the endangered raptors [birds of prey] including the Peregrine Falcon. Many committed individuals, sometim Read More Go to Site
