and Photos by Leslie Day MUTE SWAN: The Mute Swan, which is a large all-white Eurasian "pond" swan, is semi-domesticated and is now naturally wild in the Eastern United States. The 1972 Audubon Christmas count showed 2,235 birds along the Atlantic coast plus 390 in Traverse Bay, Michigan. The Mute Swan was introduced into the U.S., possibly in mid 1800's. Some people believe that the Mute Swan may have first been introduced on the large estates of eastern Long Island and the lower Hudson River Valley. OTHER NAMES: Common Swan, Domestic Swan (in
England); Wild Swan, also Tame Swan because of adaptation to
presence of people. The pair of swans at the Boat Basin eats

Votes:0 Tundra Swan Cygnus columbianus (Ord) Status Rare transient. Apart from a casual reference (Downs 1888) to "one or two instances" in earlier times, the first concrete record was of a specimen taken at Musquodoboit Harbour, Halifax County, on 6 January 1900 (Piers' notes). The next record was of two seen, one shot, in Richmond County in late fall 1919. In 1932 there were two early spring records two very weak birds, one of which was captured alive, appeared on the barrens near Louisbourg on 10 March, and a very thin bird was shot from a small flock at Little River, Yarmouth County, on 21 March. Four were seen on Brier Island on 9 November 1966 (W. Lent), three were seen there on 10 November 1973 (E.L. Mills, W. Lent) and seven appeared around Port Hebert, Shelburne County, in late December 1 Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 Mute Swans Mute Swans Beautiful but Controversial Birds Story and Photographs by Larry J. Hindman Mute swans have been cherished as symbols of purity and elegance for centuries. Native to Europe and Asia, they were transported to North America in the late nineteenth century by European immigrants. Some swans eventually escaped or were deliberately released into the wild. Public opinion about mute swans is mixed. They are very large birds, measuring 56-62 inches in length. With little or no fear of humans, they are easily observed and provide opportunities for people to come in close contact with wildlife. Their vibrant orange bills with black knobs, white plumage and long, gracefully-held necks make them conspicuous. Their young, which have a dusky tinge and grayish bill, usually remain wi Read More Go to Site

Now, Canadian researchers are using satellite tracking to follow the birds' 10,000-mile round-trip from their winter home on the Atlantic Ocean coast to breeding ground somewhere in the Canadian Arctic and back. Scientists are particualrly interested in finding out where the birds stopover while migrating in the spring and fall and how long they rest and eat at those stopover points.
