can be used as an aid to remembering and identifying birds in the
field by their songs and calls. The first list, by Voice , is sorted
alphabetically by the sounds birds make. The second, by Bird , is sorted
alphabetically by bird name. One can hear many more birds than one can see on most field
trips. It's great fun and as much a rewarding challenge to
identify birds by their sounds as by their appearance and
behavior. I discovered this some years ago at the prompting of a
friend, as she pointed out the White-throated Sparrow that we
could hear but could not see. We chased it down until we could see it, and I have been obsessed with bird songs an Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 Bird Sound Game Know Your Bird Sounds? The best way to watch birds is to actually listen for them! Most often we step into a forest, watch for movement, see none and decide there is no-one around. What you need to do is LISTEN! Step into the forest, close your eyes and listen. After you hear the bird calls, (and you will if the background noise isn't too loud), you can then use your eyes to look for where the sounds are coming from. You can use the pattern of the calls to help you figure out what bird is making the sound. Listen to the sound and see if it "speaks" to you. For example, a Robin calls out "cheerio, cheer-y-up, cheerio" and a Barred Owl calls "Who cooks for you. Who cooks for you all?". By connecting a phrase to a type of bird will help you to remember the sound the next time Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 Back To Index Birds of a Feather by Tom Thomson Sing me a Song Carefree and joyous, the singing of birds is as
symbolic of springtime as the leafing of trees and the blossoming of
flowers. "The hills are alive with the sound of music," the Trapp
Family Singers proclaimed, and who can doubt that their hearts were
cheered by the caroling of birds? Bird song has been celebrated in prose and poetry
through recorded time. The musical offerings of birds are noted in
such diverse places as the writings of ancient Greek philosophers,
the Bible, the legends of Native Americans, the literature and
folklore of most nations and cultures. "As music is the purest form of expression,"
naturalist and author Louis J. Halle muses, "so it seems to me that
the singing of birds is the purest form for the expre Read More Go to Site
