Ask A Scientist © General Science Archive Fire Ecology 2001237 name Jaeon A. status student age 14 Question - What is fire ecology? ------------------------- Jaeon, Fire ecology is a term used to describe a recently recognized means of wilderness management. Long ago, fires that occurred in forests, grasslands and swamps etc. burned out of control until they were extinguished naturally. The ecosystems affected went through natural adjustments and regeneration. When we humans took an economic and/or protective interest in wild areas, we interfered with that natural cycle of destruction and regeneration. Of course, this has the obvious benefit of preserving areas that would have otherwise been destroyed . However, by preventing or extinguishing fires, we have also contributed to making some Read More

Fire Ecology Fire is a natural phenomenon linked to the dynamics of many plant communities and animal populations. Understanding the benefits and the dangers of fire, the possible uses and avoidable misuses is a necessary act of environmental education. It has been used by humans since time immemorial to provide energy for heating and cooking, driving game, eliminating pests and disease, eliminating ambush sites, fostering the continuation of various plant species, improving wildlife habitat and range for livestock, clearing land for agriculture, and to facilitate transportation and communication. (Agee 1993) Fire can be friend or foe depending on whether it is under control or out of control. Currently an estimated average of 30-32 million acres burn out of control each year worldwide. What is fire ecology? Fire ecology is a branch of ecology that focuses on the origins of wildland fire and it?s relationship to the environment that surrounds it, both living and non-living. A wildland fire is defined as any fire that is burning in a natural environment. Fire ecologists recognize that fire is a natural process, and that it often operates as an integral part of the ecosystem in which it occurs. The main factors that are looked at in fire ecology are fire dependence and adaptation of plants and animals, fire history, fire regime and fire effects on ecosystems. Fire dependence In the 1930?s, researchers in the southern United States argued against the negative perspective that has surrounded fire, with the belief that all fire is bad. It was realized that the devastating pict Read More
