Kelp Forests

Votes:0
KELP FORESTS Kelp forests occur in cold, nutrient-rich water and are among the most beautiful and biologically productive habitats in the marine environment. They are found throughout the world in shallow open coastal waters, and the larger forests are restricted to temperatures less than 20ºC, extending to both the Arctic and Antarctic Circles. A dependence upon light for photosynthesis restricts them to clear shallow water and they are rarely much deeper than 15-40m. The kelps have in common a capacity for some of the most remarkable growth rates in the plant kingdom. In southern California, the Macrocystis can grow 30 cm per day. Infrared Air Photograph Photograph by Charles Simenstad Kelp forests are very productive and support areas of high plant biomass. This is an infrared-sensitive Read More

CWPPRA Projects Dedication Invitation (PDF 751KB) October 26, 2007 WaterMarks August 2007 Remedies Must Work in a Dynamic Natural System Complex Solutions Rely on Science and Engineering The mission sounds simple: Restore Louisiana’s wetlands. And, on the surface, the methods to accomplish it sound equally simple: erect barriers to stop erosion, import sediment to raise elevation, divert river water to nourish degraded marshes. But the solutions’ seeming simplicity belies the complexity of restoring Louisiana’s dynamic coastal ecosystem. Will the underlying soils support the weight of a barrier? What marine organisms will need to migrate through that barrier? About that sediment — how high should it be stacked? How fast will it compact? What kind of vegetation does Read More

The Sustainable Seas Expeditions was a five-year project of underwater exploration and discovery of the marine world with special emphasis on the national marine sanctuaries of the United States. Led by Dr. Sylvia Earle, scholar and Explorer-In-Residence of the National Geographic Society (NGS), the project was a collaborative effort of NGS in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), other government agencies, industry, and private institutions. It was made possible by a grant from the Richard and Rhonda Goldman Fund. The offering covered the 1999 and 2000 SSE field seasons. Over that period, 18 missions were conduc Read More

Ocean Oasis - Conservation in the Sea of Cortes

Votes:0
"The deserts and the seas can endure without us, but we cannot survive without them." — Exequiel Ezcurra The deserts of Baja California formed during the last two million years, and expanded into the peninsula during the last forty thousand years. The Sea of CortÉs formed slowly during the last two million years into its present form. Glaciations and changes in sea level slowly molded its unique spectrum of life forms. The seas have survived and evolved all this time without human beings, but we cannot survive now without the seas. The desert has seen the arrival of human beings only but very recently. It does not need us to raise and develop its unique adaptations to arid life. However, we need the desert, to support our border cities, to keep our environment safe, and to conserve th Read More
