Larry Brown sells "Classic" Cars?

Votes:0
Larry Brown's email: collectorcarsandparts@yahoo.com Website: Larry's Website Shop address: 718 York St. Quincy, IL 62301 Phone: 217 740-6151 Larry Brown is a used car dealer who purports to sell classic and collectable vehicles from parts cars to nice, drivable automobiles. The problem is that apparently he sometimes gets the two mixed up and sells a parts car as a nice, drivable auto. I will recount my experience with Mr. Brown, from here on referred to as "Larry", and my unfortunate purchase of a 1963 Studebaker Hawk GT from his Collector Car "Business". Hopefully this will make the decision of whether or not to do business with Mr. Brown a bit easier for you. According to the Quincy PD I am probably lucky that I got a car at all. Alledgedly some folks have not. Here is a copy of an ema Read More

Contact Light - a personal retrospective of Project Apollo

Votes:0
"Contact Light" a personal retrospective of Project Apollo by Kipp Teague Introduction "Contact Light" is a nostalgic and personal look back at man's first voyages to the Moon, not from the perspective of a participant, nor from that of a historian, but instead from my own perspective as a young teenager at the time of Apollo, and an avid follower of the space program. Featured here are many "artifacts" and souvenirs from the period, as well as many rare, high-quality NASA images and video clips from the historic Apollo missions. I consider myself lucky to have grown up in the 1960's. What better perspective to have had than that of a twelve-year-old, old enough to be awestruck by the distant views of Earth beamed down from the capsule of Apollo 8 on Christmas Eve of 1968, but too young to Read More

First Flight

The Wright Brothers Controlled, powered flight had seemed impossible until Orville Wright took off on the 17th December 1903. The key to the Wright Brother's success was that their engineering had gone beyond the trial and error methods of their contemporaries. Having only very limited resources they showed great scientific ingenuity. When their test flights did not produce as much lift as they had expected, they went back to first principles and carried out a series of scientific experiments , starting with the bicycle balance and moving on to their famous wind tunnel experiments. They were the first to understand how the lift from the aerofoil changes in flight, and the first to design their propellers as a form of aerofoil. simulations The Wright Brothers designed the 1903 Flyer to prot Read More

There are now 20 known Flying Tiger survivors , including four who flew the P-40 on combat missions. When I wrote Flying Tigers , I relied heavily on the Japan Defense Agency history of the air war in Southeast Asia. Among its other virtues were many fine maps of the Burma campaign . (T Read More

Early Sikorsky Aircraft Built In Russia by Carl Bobrow (ilyam@aol.com) The Winged-S In Russia The work done by Igor Sikorsky in Russia between 1909-1917 is some of the most important in the annals of aviation development. During this period of time he designed, built and flew no less than twenty aircraft and as many variants. Interestingly, the first area of aviation that Igor Sikorsky endeavored in was vertical flight, though his initial efforts in this area proved unsuccessful. Since there was very little known on the subject he was forced to design and build by intuition and rudimentary theories. After a lack of success with his first two helicopters he turned to the design and construction of airplanes, only to return successfully to helicopters some twenty five years later. The American Experience | Fly Girls | People & Events | Bessie Coleman

Votes:0
--> People & Events Bessie Coleman (1892 -1926) Bessie Coleman, the first African American female pilot, grew up in a cruel world of poverty and discrimination. The year after her birth in Atlanta, Texas, an African American man was tortured and then burned to death in nearby Paris for allegedly raping a five-year-old girl. The incident was not unusual; lynchings were endemic throughout the South. African Americans were essentially barred from voting by literacy tests. They couldn't ride in railway cars with white people, or use a wide range of public facilities set aside for whites. When young Bessie first went to school at the age of six, it was to a one-room wooden shack, a four-mile walk from her home. Often there wasn't paper to write on or pencils to write with. When Coleman turned 2 Read More

The Goodyear Blimps || Spirit of Goodyear, Spirit of America and Spirit of Innovation

| Blimp Contact Us | Quick Links | Search --> OUR FLEET BLIMP BASICS HISTORY FAQ IMAGE/VIDEO ARCHIVES For 80 years, Goodyear blimps have adorned the skies as very visible corporate symbols of the tire and rubber company that began operations in 1898. Today, these graceful giants travel more than 100,000 miles across the United States per year as Goodyear's "Aerial Ambassadors." The blimp tradition began in 1925 when Goodyear built its first helium-filled public relations airship, the Pilgrim. The tire company painted its name on the side and began barnstorming the United States. Humble beginnings to an illustrious history. Over the years, Goodyear built more than 300 airships, more than any other company in the world. Akron, Ohio, the company's world headquarters, was the center of blimp m Read More

The Unofficial Dispatch Archive

Votes:0
The Unofficial Dispatch Archive compiled by Randy Wilson The Dispatch is published quarterly by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) and American Airpower Heritage Museum (AAHM) It is a color magazine devoted to World War II aviation and air power, with an emphasis on the flying aircraft of the CAF's Ghost Squadron. I have been fortunate enough to have written a number of articles, and been otherwise involved with its development, over the last few years. I also fly some of the planes. This archive started with just those articles that I had written, thus most of my articles are included. However, a number of other authors asked that their articles be added, giving me permission to republish them here. I will keep adding articles as time allows. - Randy Wilson Last updated on 4 August, 2004 P Read More

He loved risk. He came from a wealthy Junker family and in his youth enjoyed hunting and riding horses. When the war broke out Manfred was a cavalry officer and saw duty on both the Eastern and Western fronts scouting for the German Army. By May of 1915 he was bored with scouting and asked to be transferred to the Flying service. On September 17, 1916, Richthofen recorded his first aerial combat victory. Before his career wa Read More

USS Macon | Page 1

Categorical Index | CafÉ | Library | Gallery | LucidcafÉ Home | Revised: August 25, 2007 USS Macon: At 785 Feet Long, Nearly as Large as the Famous Graf Zeppelin On April 21, 1933, the USS Macon, costing $2.5 million, left Akron, Ohio on its maiden voyage. Known officially as ZRS-5 the USS Macon, more modern and slightly faster that its sister ship, the Akron ZRS-4, had a top speed of about 87 miles per hour. The rigid airship was developed by the Goodyear-Zeppelin Co., a business jointly owned by the Zeppelin Company of Germany and the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Unlike the blimps made famous by Goodyear today, the Macon had a hollow steel hull with three interior keels. The intent of the strong spine was to prevent the type of hull collapse that occurred with one of the Macon's pre Read More
