Star Light, Star Bright

"When the stars threw down their spears And watered heaven with their tears Did he smile his work to see?" -- from William Blake, "The Tyger" Jeremiah Ostriker Nickolay Gnedin End of the Dark Ages Evening in the country, open spaces, wide sky. The sun is sinking. A pale glow lingers overhead as darkness creeps in from the east. A gleam of light catches the corner of your eye. First star. Make a wish. The daily drama of this moment, replayed through human time, hints at a similar moment billions of years ago. Before there was a Milky Way Galaxy, solar system, or planet Earth, out of cosmic darkness came the first star in the universe. To people such as Princeton cosmologist Jeremiah Ostriker and Nickolay Gnedin , his collaborator at the University of California, Berkeley, this moment marks Read More

It is based on a simple spacecraft design and carries a science payload consisting of advanced instruments that were developed for other IASTP missions. Unique features of EQUATOR-S are its nearly equatorial orbit and its high spin rate. It was launched as an auxiliary payload on an Ariane-4 on December 2nd, 1997. The mission is intended for a two-year lifetime. The idea o Read More

The two miniature probes carrying ten experimental technologies each failed to respond to a final communication effort by NASA engineers. The probes, which piggybacked aboard the Mars Polar Lander, were to slam into Martian soil December 3, 1999. Jeff MacQuarrie's Aurora Images Page The following images were taken at Poker Flat, Alaska in March 1994 with a Canon A-1 Camera. Aurorae (or northern lights) are the result of oxygen and nitrogen molecules emitting light as they are excited by electrons traveling along the Earth's magnetic field lines. The green light which is visible in these photographs is the result of electron impacts into oxygen molecules. A detailed explanation of the physics of aurorae can be found at The Aurora Borealis . Welcome to HyperSpace! This service is sponsored by the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation . Welcome to the HyperSpace service at QMUL, a set of hypertext based services for general relativity research provided by the QMUL Relativity group, based on a similar service at the University of British Columbia. Software was initially by Steve Braham . Note on a change in the service Following a disk crash in August 2005 and subsequent reconfiguration of the QMUL Maths Website, some FTP areas are not yet restored and the search facilities formerly available have been removed for security reasons. It is hoped to reprovide both eventually. To provide the search facility will require significant programming input. The complete lists of email addresses, surface addresses etc Read More

Solar Connections: Strategic Theme

Space Physics is embarking on a new voyage of discovery and exploration to characterize our space environment. Space physics is the study of the heliosphere (the sphere of influence of the Sun) as one system. It seeks to explore and understand the dynamics of the Sun and its interactions with the Earth and other planetary bodies and with the interstellar medium. NASA contributes to the creation of new scientific knowledge by exploring the Solar System and the Universe beyond and by studying the space environment and its effects on biological and physical processes... The purpose of the Scientific Research Enterprise is to seek answers to fundamental questions, such as: How are the conditions for life on Earth maintained ? How does the solar output vary? How does the Earth's magnetic field Read More

The Big Bang Theory

Liftoff Home The Big Bang Theory Representation of the universe according to inflationary cosmology. The Big Bang Theory is the dominant scientific theory about the origin of the universe. According to the big bang, the universe was created sometime between 10 billion and 20 billion years ago from a cosmic explosion that hurled matter and in all directions. In 1927, the Belgian priest Georges Lema?tre was the first to propose that the universe began with the explosion of a primeval atom. His proposal came after observing the red shift in distant nebulas by astronomers to a model of the universe based on relativity. Years later, Edwin Hubble found experimental evidence to help justify Lema?tre's theory. He found that distant galaxies in every direction are going away from us with speeds pro Read More
