(1869-1954) Henri ?mile Beno?t Matisse was born to a middle class family in Le Cateau in northern France on December 31, 1869. He attended a secondary school in Saint-Quentin from 1882 to 1887. After a year of legal studies he returned to Saint-Quentin and became a clerk in a law office. It was not until his early twenties, while recovering from a severe an attack of the appendicitis, that he began to paint.
