His mother died in 1847, so the boy's father, Auguste de Gas, and grandfather, Hilaire de Gas, were the most influential figures in his early life. Despite his own desire to paint he began to study law, but broke off his studies in 1853. He frequented FÉlix Joseph Barrias?s studio and spent his time copying Renaissance works. In 1854-1859 he made several trips to Italy, some of the time visiting relatives, studying the Old Masters; he painted historical pictures and realistic portraits of his relatives: Continued... Votes:0 Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was an outspoken proponent of a new sensibility. He and his contemporaries, known as the Impressionists, organized independent exhibitions in which they showed their controversial work. Degas's style, subject matter, and artistic sensibility set him apart from the other Impressionists. In addition to his artistic endeavors, Degas amassed a collection of art so vast and of such substance that he considered establishing his own private museum to house it. The MusÈe Degas was never realized; instead, his collection was auctioned off in 1918. Votes:0 Degas, (Hilaire-Germain-) Edgar Degas, (Hilaire-Germain-) Edgar (b. July 19, 1834, Paris, Fr.--d. Sept. 27, 1917, Paris) French artist, acknowledged as the master of drawing the human figure
in motion. Degas worked in many mediums, preferring pastel to all
others. He is perhaps best known for his paintings, drawings, and
bronzes of ballerinas and of race horses. The art of Degas reflects a concern for the psychology of movement and expression and the harmony of line and continuity of contour. These characteristics set Degas apart from the other impressionist painters, although he took part in all but one of the 8 impressionist exhibitions between 1874 and 1886. Degas was the son of a wealthy banker, and his aristocratic family background instilled into his early art a haughty yet sensitive Read More Go to Site
