This technique is used in the making of a Shadow Lamp . After the clay firms up enough so that it doesn't "bruise", I begin to "draw" the design on the piece using a small, fine wire loop similar to a paper clip in shape. After the piece dries, the entire surface both inside and out must be sanded to remove the clay burrs from the cutting action of the knife. The piece is then fired to cone 05. After the kiln cools, the dust from sanding the bu Read More Go to Site

However in some ways it is much more difficult to formulate and maintain clay bodies. This

Clays have to be formed and shaped, glazes do not. Clays have to achieve the critical
balances involved with vitrification. Clay bodies tend to be made from less reliable
materials and require close scrutiny to maintain their properties. Like glazes, understa Read More Go to Site

Each step in the overall pottery process is an art in it's self. The glazing process and firing techniques affect the finished piece as much as the throwing process. The glazes and their reactions to the clay body, other glazes, heat reductions and chemical reactions taking place inside the kiln, are what you see on a finished piece of pottery.
