Votes:0 Main | Other Chinese Web Sites Chinese Cultural Studies: Ethnography of China Compiled from From Compton's Living Encyclopedia on America Online (August 1995) THE PEOPLE China has the largest population of any country: 1,133,682,501 people were counted during the census taken in 1990. This population had grown rapidly in recent times, expanding by approximately 15 million each year, an increase equal to the total population of Australia. Between 1964 and 1982 China added 313 million to its population, more people than lived in the Soviet Union during that time. This rapid growth has occurred because the death rate has dropped sharply. The birthrate has also fallen, but the total population is enormous, and there are many young people. Thus, without extreme means of population control, the Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 PASTEL TECHNIQUES HOME BUY ART! ART NOTES INDEX NEXT... As you look over my artwork, you may have noticed that I enjoy a rather bold use of colors and a wide range of techniques. However, there are some unifying themes to them all. For example, although we frequently refer to "pastel paintings," they are in fact, a cross between painting and drawing. Likewise, the Chinese ink brush paintings are often called "Chinese watercolor" but the style which I use most often is more like drawing than painting (there are other styles which do involve a techniques more similar to European watercolor or gauche painting, and these I occasionally use, also). PASTELS. By their nature, pastels usually have pure, but somewhat soft and pale colors. As a result, one can not rely heavily on gradations of gray Read More Go to Site

(V.ii) Perhaps the most popular (and least satisfying to those who are truly moved by the play) critical elaboration of the character of Hamlet has been that of the 'man of thought vrs. the man of action'. This perspective is appealing in that it explains, albeit superficially, why it takes Hamlet five acts to do the deed he promises at the beginning. I call this superficial because it avoids the undeniable emotional and spiritual development of Hamlet and focuses almost entirely on the intellectual. Votes:0 STAGE 1- The Blueprint I arrange my still life objects under artificial lighting and manipulate them until I create dynamic shadows and strong value contrast. Using Ersta rough sanded paper, I sketch my set-up using a light colored pastel pencil. At this point, I want to establish the composition, making sure the placement of the shapes is balanced and aesthetically pleasing. I can continue to redraw until I get it the way I want so my 'preliminary' sketches become my painting and I do not need to transfer my drawing to another paper. STAGE 2 - The Foundation For the underpainting I use a thin oil paint and turpentine wash which stains the paper without filling in the tooth.
