About Colored Pencil Techniques and Materials Q. I've been buying 2-ply white Rising Museum Board from Daniel Smith Inc. but have learned from them that they are not going to carry it anymore. Are there any other suppliers? A. I too was disappointed to learn that Daniel Smith Inc. is not going to carry it any longer. Rising Museum Board is one of the very best drawing surfaces for colored pencil and is recommended by many teachers including me. Where to buy it now? From Art Media in Portland, Oregon. They have sold and shipped Rising Museum Board for years (decades really). They will also sell it in smaller sizes than the full mat board size. Their toll free number is 1-800-990-3364. Q. How do you create a metallic effect like gold? A. To successfully render reflective metallic surfaces, e Read More

When I use them this way, they as called props. When I started Shoe Town I needed a shoe for the little mouse to live in. I thought it should be a little girl kind of shoe. I did not have one on hand, so I ended up going to the store and buying a pair of Mary Jane patent leather shoes for my mouse to live in. This is the one I drew in the book. Right next to the shoe you see a roll of tracing paper. I use a lot of tracing paper. At this stage of the book I am gathering props and sketching. FOCUS on ITALY - Italian cuisine

ITALIAN CUISINE Italy is a country of great diversity nearly in every facet of life and food is one of them. The long Mediterranean coastline of Italy encloses a picturesque landscape of fertile plains, arid rocks and forest-covered mountains. This variable landscape brings a diverse climate pattern without any doubt. From the south to the north we encounter a large variety of crops such as; tomatoes, lemon, garlic and olives in the south, rice and maize in the north. This rich diversity of ingredients which are locally available, has naturally affected the famous recipes of Italian cuisine as never seen on any other cuisine. The most famous dish of Italian cuisine, known as pasta, has more than 400 different forms. There are also many different varieties of sauces which are undisputed cou Read More

BIO-ART: THE ART OF NATURE. THE ART OF NATURE The Naturalist's Sketchbook Learning to Draw/Drawing to Learn TRICKS, HINTS & TECHNIQUES by Paul D. Bell and Robert Tuckerman, School of Natural Resources , Sir Sandford Fleming College . Drawing well, knowing nothing and breaking the rules. When you draw, you're going to encounter conflicts between what you see and what you know. For example, make a drawing of your own hand (see below after reading this section) in an unusual position, with the fingers pointing toward or away from you (closing one eye helps). This will probably create all sorts of difficulties. We know the hand must have fingers of a certain length --otherwise it just isn't right and we'll doggedly keep trying to match what we see to the hand symbol we "know". You need to foll Read More

History - The Basilica

Votes:0
ST. MARK'S BASILICA The first patron saint of Venice was St.Teodoro. In 828 St.Mark the Evangelist substituted him when two merchants smuggled his mortal remains back from Alessandria (Egypt). St.Mark's remains were initially buried in a chapel in the Doge's Palace but later a church was built that was to be his perpetual resting place. The church later suffered damage from fire and was modified many times to adapt to Venice's evolution of power and wealth. This simple church evolved into St.Mark's Basilica. The modifications to the Basilica continued on through an entire century, therefore the results of the construction exhibit a mixture of different styles. In order to justify the theft of St.Mark's body, legend states that when the Evangelist went to the lagoon, an angel came and said: Read More

How to make drawing charcoal, page 1

How to Make Drawing Charcoal Evan Lindquist Emeritus Professor of Art, Arkansas State University, Jonesboro Charcoal is available commercially in three grades of hardness, but it is possible to create a wider variety of charcoal for drawing. Different types of wood and preparation allow warmer or cooler color and different qualities of texture. It is also possible to create various sizes of charcoal sticks and blocks. There is little in literature to guide us in making charcoal. One mention of the process is found in The Book of the Art of Cennino Cennini , a 1437 treatise on Italian painting, translated by Christiana J. Herringham in 1899. Cennino describes cutting the twigs, placing them in a casserole, and sealing the casserole with clay. The casserole would be placed overnight in the l Read More

Christmas In Italy [Regions of Italy] The Holiday Season in Italy C ountless foreigners travel to Italy during the Christmas season, and while they thrill to midnight mass in St. Peter's Square, they often complain that Italy is "not very Christmasy." This is certainly true if you're looking for brightly-lit fir trees, red and green window dressings or plaster reindeer. And although Epiphany, celebrated on January 6th, may actually be a more important holiday than December 25th, the Italians love this season so much that they commemorate it for an entire month, beginning on December 8th. T he period between mid-December and early January was one constant celebration even in pagan Rome. It began with the Saturnalia, a winter solstice festival, and ended with the Roman New Year, the Calends. Read More

Prehistoric Italy: A Roadmap [Regions of Italy] F ew of us go to Italy specifically searching for prehistoric art, yet it is everywhere and can offer a fascinating break. You'll encounter signs of Paleolithic civilization in the caves at Balzo Rossi (Ventimiglia), Toirano (Savona) and Grotta Guattari (Circeo). The museums of Paestum and Siracusa have excellent collections of ancient objects. R ock formations called dolmen and menhir dating back to the Aeneolithic and Bronze Ages are prevalent all over southern Italy, especially in the provinces of Bari and Lecce, and are also visible in the Parco Nazionale delle Incisioni Rupestri in Capo di Ponte (Brescia) and in the Lunigiana region of northern Tuscany. In Italy Online - The Original Mediterranean Diet

The Original Mediterranean Diet T he residents of the Italian peninsula in ancient times learned most of what they knew about food and nutrition from the Greeks who colonized Sicily and the lower part of the "boot." The Greeks were partial to a diet which has recently been revived in this country under the name the "Mediterranean diet" and which consists mainly of fruits, vegetables, legumes and olive oil. The original Mediterranean diet which the Greeks brought to Italy was later enhanced with the development of pasta. Historians disagree about the exact time and place of pasta's invention but there is clear evidence of pasta's existence in the glory days of Rome. Italian Cuisine

Italy! Long before Italy became the nation we now see, she was divided into constantly warring city-states which shared few cultural traditions and no spoken language. The Italy we know today was formed in 1861. The Italian we hear was not commonly spoken by a majority of the population until after World War II, and Italians still identify themselves regionally before all else. The geography of the boot reinforces regional integrity: a spine of mountains cuts Italy in half from guzzle to zatch, while the mountains are echoed in countless deep valleys, all difficult to access. The result is a map made up of small communities with farms, recipes, and cooking methods that have developed in relative isolation for hundreds of years. Americans know northern and southern Italian fare as well as s Read More

Jan's TLK Page - How to draw TLK (Drawing Techniques)

Votes:0
Drawing Techniques Drawing the characters from The Lion King can be fun and rewarding . With a little patience and practice, you will soon be producing successful drawings of your own ! Most characters are based on simple round and oval shapes. Using a light, continuous motion, sketch around and around until you've made a circle or oval that is the correct shape . Also practice drawing curves with smoth strokes. You may then erase any stray lines for a clean look. Try sketching a variety of sizes, or join shapes together to create new shapes . One of the most important things to remember is to begin with a line of action. This is what gives your character movement and life. The line of action should flow naturally and smoothly. Lasagna della Vigilia (Christmas Eve Lasagna) There used to be a tradition in Italy of making this lasagna from huge sheets of past that symbolized the cloth that wrapped the Christmas child. In Italy, most people fast all of Christmas Eve day and then at midnight they eat a big feast! 1/2 cup unsalted butter 8 anchovy filets in oil, drained and finely chopped 2 large cloves garlic, finely minced 1 pound lasagne noodles 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese lots of freshly ground pepper In a large enameled skillet melt the butter slowly over medium low heat. Add the anchovies and garlic and warm them in the butter about 5 minutes, using a wooden spoon to mash the anchovies as thoroughly as you can. In a large pot of boiling salted water cook the pasta. Pencil Drawing Tips and Tricks

The Pencil Drawing Art Gallery Note that the way I work may not be at all what is suited for you, but seeing I'm getting a lot of requests for tips, I thought I'd show you some stages in the process of my drawing. FINISHING DRAWINGS You may wonder where you can see the full versions of the drawings shown below. Well, besides the Drew Barrymore drawing (which I drew for a Drew Barrymore fan site, also viewable in the famous art section ) and Froukje, these are all pictures that I actually have not completed. Not yet, though I know of some that will probably never be finished. Alas, that is life. It's a Gemini thing, not finishing stuff, so I'll blame astrology, lol. THE MATERIALS I used to draw on A4 sized paper (21x29.7cm), but almost every drawing you'll find on this site was done on A3 ( Read More

Perspective Drawing

Perspective Drawing Perspective Drawing Discussion Find it on the Web: Pictures in perspective Discussion If you look along a straight road, the parallel sides of the road appear meet at a point in the distance. This point is called the vanishing point and has been used to add realism to art since the 1400's in Florence, Italy (via city.net) . Suppose you want to draw a railroad track that vanishes into the distance. The rays from the points a given distance from the eye along the lines of the tracks are projected to the eye. The angle formed by these rays decreases with increasing distance from the eye. The picture below shows an overhead view of an observer (camera or eye) looking down the the track. The next picture shows a side view. The observer's eye or camera is above the ground. Dr Read More

Spontaneous Pen & Ink Drawing by Messa

Spontaneous Drawing Pen & Ink Drawings by Messa click image to enlarge Spontaneous Drawing What is "Spontaneous drawing"? As the name implies, it is drawing without a layout or sketches. It is direct ! It is drawing from the mind's eye, before thought has a chance to interfere with the flow of the marks on the page, one line flowing with another to create a new impression of what the drawing may reveal. The choice of where to place the next mark is instinctive in the beginning, "spontaneous", and as the drawing progresses, shapes suggest images and thought brings structure from memory to the page. The Artist may use any style, Abstract, Impressionist, Realistic, etc.,to accomplish this work. Drawing directly from the mind's eye is the main principle in this technique, t Read More

The Living Crib

The Living Crib The Living Crib by Erika Bandini Loris Geminiani Motivations Each year during the Christmas holidays, Living Crib takes place in our country. This event involves a large number of inhabitants and attracts many tourists. The idea of a living crib was started some years ago after a reflection-- a discussion-- happened between the teachers of the nursery school and the kindergarten. The same quarrel occurred about this problem each year at Christmas. The teachers asked: "How should we represent the holiday in a meaningful way?" Departing from the idea that the classical performances and dramatizations require a long and sometimes stressful preparation, above all for the children, the teachers sought a new way to live the holyday, thinking that it could improve the re Read More

Benvenuti Martedi 20 Novembre 2007 10:45 (Ora USA SLC) 13th and 14th Centuries Italian Literature, literature written in the Italian language from about the 13th century to the present. Middle Ages Before the 13th century the literary language of Italy was Latin, which served for the writing of chronicles, historical poems, heroic legends, lives of the saints, religious poems, and didactic and scientific works. In addition to those who wrote in Latin, a number of the early Italian poets wrote in French or in ProvenÇal, and borrowed most of their verse forms and literary themes from foreign sources. One of the most important verse forms was the ProvenÇal canzone. The literary themes included the deeds of ancient heroes, of Arthurian knights, and of Charlemagne and his paladins.
