They are cylindrical and conical in shape. Two-thirds up from the bottom, the cylinder is of one piece, whereas at a third or a quarter length from the top, a slab was cut out from the main upper structure to enable the inserti Read More

Welcome to... The Baalbek Awareness Page Have you seen this stone? This is not one of the seven wonders of the world, but it is the largest megalith known to man. Located in the Beqaa Valley, 85 kilometers from Beirut, this phenomenal stone is estimated to weigh nearly 1200 tons. No modern machinery could support this weight. The dimensions of the stone are approximately 68'x14'x14'. For more images of the megalith, download stone1.jpg and stone2.jpg . This megalith was hewn from red granite, and is still attached to the bedrock. Other stones of equal grandeur were quarried in the same location, and carried over half of a mile uphill to the "Grand Terrace" of Baalbek, Lebanon. Beersheba — the Southern Border of the Kingdom of Judah

Votes:0
Beersheba — the Southern Border of the Kingdom of Judah Tel Sheva, the mound of biblical Beersheba, is located in the northern Negev, several kilometers east of the present-day city of Be'er Sheva. The Arabic name of the mound, Tell es-Sab'a , preserves the biblical name; the archeological finds support its identification with biblical Beersheba. The ancient town was built on a low hill on the bank of a wadi (dry river-bed), which carries floodwater during the winter months. A close-to-the-surface aquifer along the wadi ensured the year-round supply of water. Beersheba is first mentioned in the biblical account of God's revelation to the patriarchs (Gen. 26:23-25; 46:1) and its name is derived from the Hebrew word shevu'a (oath) or shiv'a (seven) as elaborated in Gen. 21:31 and 26:33. A Regional Approach to Archaeology on the Madaba Plain: Random Survey and Settlement Patterns By Gary L. Christopherson The University of Arizona Presented at the Annual Meetings of the American Schools of Oriental Research November, 1997 Napa, California Abstract From its inception, the Madaba Plains Project has included hinterland surveys in its research design. This emphasis on a regional approach has led to the collection of a broad range of environmental and archaeological data for the regions of Tall Hisban, Tall al-Umayri, and Tall Jalul. As an example of the types of research being conducted, this paper focuses on the random sample survey in the vicinity of Tall Hisban. Jordan Valley Village Project Location: The Northern Jordan Valley, Jordan Investigators: Steven Falconer, Patricia Fall, Jennifer Jones The Jordan Valley Village Project (JVVP) focuses on the nature of Near Eastern rural life during the Early and Middle Bronze Ages. These periods witness dramatic changes in social organization stemming from the first cities in the region, and their subsequent abandonment and rejuvenation. Villages and village life appear to be remarkably persistent in the face of these social changes. The main goal of the Jordan Valley Village Project is to reconstruct the rural economy and ecology of these resilient villages. During the Winter 1996/97 field season we excavated two Early Bronze IV (2300/2200-2000 B. C.) villages in the northern Jordan Valley, Jordan: Tell Read More

Libya: Cultural Sites

UNESCO/WHS Cultural Sites of Libya A little-known - or poorly-known - heritage, preserved partly by the absence of tourism and offering an array of treasures, has observed the rise and fall of brilliant and sophisticated civilizations on this vast territory. Dating from prehistory to Islamic civilization, the five sites added to the World Heritage List between 1982 and 1986 provide a clear illustration that Libya has a heritage whose incalculable value belongs to all humanity. Three sites, Cyrene, Leptis Magna and Sabratha, bear witness to the life that flourished in Libya during the Punic, Greek, Roman and Byzantine eras. These sites - and particularly Leptis and Cyrene - are attracting attention from many foreign archaeologists, including teams from France, Italy and the United Kingdom. Read More

Petra - Myth and reality

Petra - Myth and reality Philip C. Hammond © Vivian Ronay When Harrison Ford finally found the Holy Grail inside the Khaznat al-Faron at Petra, at the climax of the film Indiana Jones and the last Crusade , a new myth was born. But Ford, and his scriptwriters, were only following in a long line of people who have contributed to the myths, misinformation and confusion surrounding the fabeled "rose-red city" of Petra - not only since its rediscovery in 1812 but as far back as the Middle Ages. The list of misconceptions with which Petra has been plagued over the centuries is almost overwhelming. Most are harmless errors in names, dates, attributions and the like, but, taken as a whole, they detract greatly from the reality of this important scenic and archeological site. Click on this image for a more detailed browse image. Petra Region, Jordan P-47047 September 24, 1998 This spaceborne radar image is being used by archaeologists to study geographical factors that influenced the cultural developments of Petra, Jordan. For the past 10,000 years, the Petra region has been the site of some of the most important cultural developments in the history of humankind. Early agriculture and metallurgy were practiced here, and links were forged in a trading network that stretched from East Asia to Europe. These events are remembered in sacred stories, and today the region is a part of what adherents to the Muslim, Jewish, and Christian religions consider their homeland. Limestone highlands, the purple area in the lower right, were forested areas before the trees were Read More

THE ?AIN GHAZAL STATUE PROJECT A group of Pre-Pottery Neolithic lime plaster statues are currently undergoing conservation at the Institute of Archaeology. Neolithic ?Ain Ghazal The statues were found at the Neolithic site of ?Ain Ghazal, in central Jordan during excavation in 1983. The site was initially discovered during the building of a new road in the 1970?s on the north-east outskirts of Amman and most excavation has been of a rescue nature, made necessary because of extensive development taking place in the area. Excavation has produced information showing that the site, measuring approx. 30 acres was occupied for more than 2000 years as a farming settlement. ?Ain Ghazal is thought to have been founded around 7250 BC in the mid pre-pottery Neolithic B and abandoned around 5000BC. THE SAKÇAGÖZÜ PROJECT (TURKEY): THE EARLY PREHISTORY OF THE NORTH LEVANTINE RIFT VALLEY. Dr. ANDREW GARRARD The Near East lies at the "bridgehead" between Africa, Europe and Asia, however our knowledge of the Palaeolithic period is still very limited. Much of the information relating to the colonisation and behaviour of early hominid and later hunter- gatherer populations stems from field studies undertaken in the central and southern Levant. The Neolithic is more widely known, having benefitted from recent salvage excavations in the upper Euphrates and Tigris systems, and work in central Anatolia, but there are still significant gaps in regional coverage. One neglected, but potentially significant area, is the north Levantine corridor lying between the Euphrates and Mediter Read More

Warehouses and Granaries in Caesarea Maritima

Warehouses and Granaries in Caesarea Maritima Joseph Patrich University of Haifa Introduction Caesarea was a maritime city with an elaborate harbor. Later it also became the provincial capital of Judaea / Palaestina. Storage facilities occupied no doubt large areas of the city. The recent excavations enable us to distinguish several different types of storage facilities, to locate many of them on the actual city plan, and to evaluate their significance in the economy and administration of Caesarea. 1 The storage facilities uncovered in the recent excavations of Combined Caesarea Expeditions (CCE) and the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) south of the Crusader town cover ca. 25% of the excavated area ( fig. 1 ), a most significant percentage. In fact, area KK - an entire insula of the Byza Read More
