1492 Exhibit Welcome to 1492: AN ONGOING VOYAGE an Exhibit of the Library of Congress, Washington, DC 1492. Columbus. The date and the name provoke many questions related to the linking of very different parts of the world, the Western Hemisphere and the Mediterranean. What was life like in those areas before 1492? What spurred European expansion? How did European, African and American peoples react to each other? What were some of the immediate results of these contacts? 1492: AN ONGOING VOYAGE addresses such questions by examining the rich mixture of societies coexisting in five areas of this hemisphere before European arrival. It then surveys the polyglot Mediterranean world at a dynamic turning point in its development. The exhibition examines the first sustained contacts between Ameri Read More

American Realities Historical Episodes from the First Settlements to the Present "American history is an epic composed of many events: colonists made their homes in a new world; soldiers fought for independence; capitalists built giant industries; civil rights activists struggled for equality. In such episodes we encounter the emotions, thoughts, and experiences that made up the distinct worlds of the past. In the two volumes of American Realities my goal has been to re-create some of those worlds, to capture the immediacy--the reality--of life as lived in other eras. I have not tried to reduce all these events to a single pattern, but in the aggregate the chapters trace the course of American history from the distant past to the present." History Through Hollywood Eyes by Paul Hartman ~ The Western ~ T he long camera angle views the stagecoach as it follows the winding trail through what is now the familiar landscape of Sidona, Arizona, the occupants of the stage unaware that a thousand yards ahead, behind a turn, and hidden by rocks, wait at least 500 Indians. The stage coach passes that point unharmed, THEN the Indians give chase, firing at the driver and occupants with arrow and bullet. The hero climbs to the top of the stage, and with a (seven shot) lever-action Winchester carbine, kills at least a hundred of the Indians before they give up the chase. Wait a minute. If the Indians shoot ONE HORSE, the chase ends immediately. They NEVER think of that! But wait again. Different scene. This time it is 4 white guys waiting Read More

Votes:0
Part I Iran/contra: The Underlying Facts The Contras Independent Counsel's investigation produced a vast record of U.S. Government involvement with the Nicaraguan contras during a prohibition on military aid from October 1984 to October 1986. The Office of Independent Counsel (OIC) focused its inquiry on possible criminal activity -- ranging from violations of the Boland Amendment prohibition on aid to conspiracy to violate the tax laws -- in Administration efforts to assist the military and paramilitary operations of the contras. The investigation also centered on what officials knew about that assistance and what they offered when questioned about it. No effort was made to create a complete historical record of U.S. activities in the region, or even of American ties to the contras. Indep Read More

What Old Glory Means

***What Old Glory Means*** "Why fly the flag?" the young man asked. "Long ago, when it was young . . . well, it was different then: it was novel . . . the thing to do. But now the flag is old . . . and the custom long outmoded." The old man smiled. "Yes," he said, "the flag is old now . . . but then it always has been old. Remember? It was 'Old Glory' 'way back there on Cowpens field, where Howard's men endowed it with that name of love . . . And it was old . . . and tattered too . . . the day it flew o'er Brooklyn's stubborn stand by Smallwood's bold command. It was older still, of course, at fort McHenry when, waving in the morning breeze, it inspired a hymn of noble destiny.
