David Livingstone (1813-73) For more than 30 years David Livingstone worked in Africa as a medical missionary and traveled the continent from the equator to the Cape and from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean. In so doing, he gained worldwide fame as an explorer and strongly influenced the way successive generations have thought about Africa. By awakening the interest of the outside world in the then largely unknown continent, he helped pave the way for its European colonization later in the 19th century. Also, through his strong belief that Africans could advance into the modern world, he served as an inspiration for African nationalism. David Livingstone was born in Blantyre, Scotland, on March 19, 1813. One of seven children of a very poor family, he was already working in a cotton mill Read More

DAVID LIVINGSTONE FROM Cambridge Speech of 1857 David Livingstone (1813-1873), the Scottish missionary and explorer of Africa, personified for Britain the higher cause of imperialism. My object in going into the country south of the desert was to instruct the natives in a knowledge of Christianity, but many circumstances prevented my living amongst them more than seven Read More

HOME Livingstone Memorial - Victoria Falls David Livingstone (1813-1873) It was the mighty Zambezi which led missionary Dr. David Livingstone on his greatest and final adventure. In search of a means to access the interior, Livingstone tagged the Zambezi "God's highway" to the Indian Ocean and set off down the river, discovering the great cataract native Africans called Mosi-o-Tunya, "the smoke that thunders." Livingstone christened the great waterfall Victoria Falls after his queen. Today, the great chasm has lost none of it's allure, still considered one of the great natural wonders of the world. David Livingstone: African Explorer Few Europeans have contributed as much to the exploration of Africa as a gentle Scottish missionary named David Livingstone. Livingstone was a curious combina Read More
