Upon independence from Yugoslavia on March 3, 1992, the Bosnian-led government chose a neutral flag in order to appease the Serb and Croat populations. The flag was adopted on May 4, 1992, but was rejected by many Croats and Serbs as the country slipped into a civil war. Following the 1995 peace accords, the United Nations established the current flag on Feb. 4, 1998.
