Tower Bridge
One of London's most familiar landmarks, Tower Bridge was completed in 1894 to ease congestion on London Bridge. Because of the reduction in shipping the roadway is today raised only infrequently to allow vessels through, but it is an impressive sight when it happens.
For those not content with admiring its Gothic silhouette from a distance, an imaginative tour - the "Tower Bridge Experience" - around the bridge's innards should be just the thing. Characters from the bridg ...

Amsterdam, City of Bridges
Water and bridges are of vital importance to Amsterdam’s unique position among the historic cities of the north. Along the banks of the river Amstel a city developed that depended on the water for its survival. At one time water was even more important than dry land. After all, it was the water that allowed tradesmen to transport goods from A to B; it ...

Rialto
Rialto was the first harbour of Venice. The barrels, boxes, spices, wine and oil perfumes which were unloaded on the bank of the GrandCanal were housed in the warehouses called " fondaci ". During the day the goods brought outdoors were sold on the stalls around the church of San Giovanni Elemosinaro. The market could be reached by an opening in the bridge called the monete which today can be seen only in a picture in the collection of the Academy of Fine Arts. The bridge, painted by Carpaccio was replaced with that planned by Antonio da Ponte, - built in stone on a single arch -, in the second half of a fifteenth century.

Found between Lungarno Acciaoli and Via Guicciardini. This is the oldest bridge which crosses the Arno at its widest point. It dates back to Roman times and has often been re-built.
After the flooding of 1333 it was re-constructed with a double row of shops, passing from a defencive type of architecture to the actual public one. In 1565 the east-facing Vasariano Corridor above the shops was built and the back-shops were added in the seventeenth century giving the bridge its actual structure.

Marlow Suspension Bridge
There has been a bridge across the Thames at Marlow since before 1227. The present bridge was built between 1829 and 1832 to replace the wooden bridge sited further downstream, which had grown inadequate for the growing traffic on the Reading and Hatfield Turnpike road. It eventually collapsed in 1828. William Tierney Clark FRS MICE (1783-1852) was appointed to design a new bridge and supervise its construction.
In the Marlow Bridge Act of 1829 the responsibility f ...

Forth Rail Bridge
The photograph on the "Gateway to Scotland" front page shows the Forth Rail Bridge in the distance past a traditional fishing cottage in South Queensferry.
One of the most spectacular man-made landmarks in Scotland is the Forth Rail Bridge. This solid cantilever bridge, built by Sir William Arrol, was opened in 1890. The bridge crosses the River Forth between South Queensferry and North Queensferry, and still carries the East Coast mainline railway north from Edinburgh to Perth and Dundee.
Further information, including web cams pointed at the Forth Bridges (road and rail) are available:

Tower bridge
Tower Bridge was built in the 1890s, and its neo-Gothic stone cladding disguises what is basically a steel structure. There is thought to be no truth to the legend that when an American entrepreneur bought London Bridge and moved it to the USA, he thought he was getting this one.
In this picture we see Edward Burrell's Dutch Barge Angelus leaving to carry a replica of the Great Helm from the Tower of London on the first stage of its journey by inland waterways to the new Royal Armouries in Leeds. The journey was arranged by various IWA branches on the route, in collaboration for this first stage with the Dutch Barge Association .
