Hot Dry Rock Geothermal Energy Technology
HDR Schematic A picture of the Fenton Hill plant
(Now Decommissioned)
HDR Technology
The technology to mine the heat from the hot rock found almost everywhere at some depth beneath the surface of the earth was conceived and developed at Los Alamos between the years of 1970 and 1996. Conceptually, hot dry rock (HDR) heat mining is quite simple. As shown in the drawing (above, left) water is pumped into hot, crystalline rock via an inject ...

Hot Rocks
Narration: The reality is, in the late 1990s, the world at large is still on a “power trip”. Developing countries have tripled their energy consumption since 1970. Worldwide energy use is set to jump 70% in the next 30 years because of population growth alone!
All the while, fossil fuels are dwindling. Known oil reserves will last only another 40 years; natural gas reserves, 60 years. There’s coal for 200 years, but it’s far from environmentally clean.
The great hope ...

Energy from the Earth
Geothermal energy comes from the structure of the earth and its interior heat source and circulation.
There is a continual flow of heat energy outwards towards the surface
Surface Manifestations Include:
Volcanoes
Hot springs
Geysers
Conventional Uses of Geothermal Energy:
A Tourist Attraction - come sit in our hot springs with people you don't know
As a direct source of space heating
As an instant steam generating facility to spin a turbine
