GUESSING THE PRIME NUMBER THEOREM AND TREACHEROUS LOGIC
The Prime Number theorem says that the probability P(x) that a large integer x is prime is about 1/log x. At about age 16 Gauss apparently conjectured this estimate after studying tables of primes. Greg Martin suggested to me the following heuristic way to approach the same conjecture.
Suppose that there is a nice probability function P(x) that a large integer x is prime. As x increases b ...

How many men wear skirts?
What's the chance of tossing a head and then rolling 3 on a die? Because tossing a coin has no influence on rolling a die, the chance of tossing a head and rolling a 3 can be calculated by simply multiplying the chance of the two events together.
The chance of tossing
a head is 1/2
The chance of rolling a 3 is 1/6
The chance of both together is 1/2 x 1/6 = 1/12, or a 1 in 12 chance.
This doesn't work if the two events are not independent, ho ...

The Hermit's Epidemic
Expected value has very practical applications. For example, it can be used in the study of infectious diseases. The following is an extremely simplified version of such a study. Despite the somewhat unrealistic nature of the problem, it should help you to see how this statistic can be used.
Six (unusually sociable) hermits live on an otherwise deserted island. An infectious disease strikes the island. The disease has a 1-day infectious period and after that ...

Histogram Applet
This applet is designed to teach students how bin widths (or the number of bins) affect a histogram. The histogram below is for the Old Faithful data set. The observations are the duration (in minutes) for eruptions of the Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park. Students should interactively change the bin width by dragging the arrow underneath the bin width scale. For large bin widths, the bimodal nature of the dataset is hidden, and for small bin widths the plot red ...

Each year, millions of people travel to casinos hoping they will come away richer. Many more people visit their local supermarket each day to bet with lottery cards. People play the stock market, join in the office football pool, and meet with friends on the weekend for a game of poker. Why do we invest this money on chance? We do it because we believe we can beat the odds. We believe in the possibility of winning.

The Normal Distribution
The normal distributions are a very important class of statistical distributions. All normal distributions are symmetric and have bell-shaped density curves with a single peak.
To speak specifically of any normal distribution, two quantities have to be specified: the mean , where the peak of the density occurs, and the standard deviation , which indicates the spread or girth of the bell curve. (The greek symbol is pronounced mu and the greek symbol is pronounced ...

RPKP Experiments: Probability and Statistics
Calculation and Chance
Most experimental searches for paranormal phenomena are statistical in nature. A subject repeatedly attempts a task with a known probability of success due to chance, then the number of actual successes is compared to the chance expectation. If a subject scores consistently higher or lower than the chance expectation after a large number of attempts, one can calculate the probability of such a score due purely to chance, ...

Seeing Statistics is a new approach to teaching statistics using the World Wide Web. This electronic book is based on three premises:
The important principles of statistics, even the most difficult ones, are remarkably easy if they can be seen.
Learning is facilitiated by the active participation of the student.
Statistics can be fun!
Seeing Statistics is published by Duxbury Press and is available at www.seeingstatistics.com. A free tour of several chapters is available there. You m ...

Welcome
· Statistics research at Bell Labs is part of Mathematical Sciences research, and also part of Computer Science research via a "dotted-line" relation. Our tradition of fundamental research driven by real-world applications goes back to Walter Shewhart and John Tukey. Today, by continuing to focus on data from a host of challenging applications, we are working on new ways to think about, look at, and compute with data.

STatistical Education through Problem Solving
The STEPS consortium has developed problem-based modules to support the teaching of Statistics in Biology, Business, Geography and Psychology. The software is freely available to educational institutions, and can be downloaded from this Web site.
Further information about the STEPS project
Details of the software available and how to download it: Windows | Mac
How to get help, and frequently-asked questions
The STEPS software comes with a built-in Glossary of statistical terms, in order to provide a supportive educational environment. A Web version of the Glossary is also available.

t-distributions/b>
(Math | Distributions | t-Distributions)
The t-distribution, with n degrees of freedom, is given by the equation:
f(t) = [ ((n + 1)/2) (1 + x^2 / n)^(-n/2 - 1/2) ] / [ (n/2) (PI n) ] (See also Gamma Function.)
