Biology
Classification and Range Carl Linnaeus devised the classification system in zoology that we use today. In this system, humans and the three categories of great apes (chimpanzees, orangutans, and gorillas) all belong to the order Primates. Gorillas, the largest of the great apes, are divided into three subspecies: (1) western lowland gorillas (Gorillas gorilla gorilla), (2) eastern lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla graueri), and (3) mountain gorillas (Gorilla ...

Gorillas are the largest living primates. Males grow considerably larger than females.
The brain size of gorillas averages 500 cc, but males, being bigger, tend to have larger brains than females. Various sources list the maximum brain size of gorillas as 650 cc, 700 cc, or in the case of one exceptional specimen, 752 cc (Tobias, 1964).

Gorilla Help Site
Fewer than 650 mountain gorillas and 40,000 lowland gorillas are left in the world. Their existence continues to be threatened as increasing human populations continue to decrease the gorillas' habitats. Gentle and intelligent creatures, gorillas are more closely-related to humankind than many would expect. In August, the siverback you see on the picture was shot to death while he was trying to prevent the kidnapping of the baby sitting on his back. That such a futile tra ...

GORILLAS

Gorilla, mammal, largest, and most powerful anthropoid ape.
Gorillas inhabit the forests of equatorial Africa from the western lowlands near the Cameroon coast to an altitude of about 3,000 m (10,000 ft) in the central highlands of Zaïre and Uganda.

Mountain Gorilla
The mountain gorilla lives in ever-shrinking preserves high in the rainforests of central east Africa. The fragile rhythms of gorilla life continue as families play, lovingly interacting with the newborn and young, foraging for tender bamboo shoots, and fighting for their lives. Listen to agitated grunts and a powerful chest beating display.

Mountain Gorilla
Gorilla gorilla beringei
Endangered
This largest of the great apes inhabits a number of isolated areas on the forested mountain slopes of eastern Zaire and parts of Uganda and Rwanda. Its population is estimated at approximately 400. Although much of the animal’s range is within national parks and reserves, human’s growing needs for farming and grazing lands have reduced these areas. These disruptions may also force other animals, such as elephant and b ...

The Gorilla (gorilla gorilla): largest and most powerful of the primates.
How Big is a Gorilla? The male gorilla can grow to be about six feet tall, so they aren't as tall as some male humans. The female gorilla can grow to about five feet tall. So their height isn't what makes them so powerful. But the male gorilla can weigh up to 600 (six hundred) pounds! That's more than three times what my dad weighs, and he's over six feet tall. Female gorillas can weigh up to 200 pounds.
