Zebras
Although closely related to horses and donkeys, zebras have never been domesticated. For me, they would quickly lose their mystique if they were seen pulling a cart down the road or dragging a plow through a field.
There are several subspecies (races) of zebras in Africa. Three are pictured here. The most commonly seen are the plains or Burchell's zebras. These zebras are related to horses and they are often found in the company of wildebeests. The two are complementary grazers, with ze ...

Why do zebras have stripes?
Two reasons: to tell each other apart and to confuse animals that want to eat them!
There are three different kinds of zebras. Each type has a specific kind of shape and behavior -- and stripe pattern. One kind has wide stripes that go up and down, another has a lot of skinny vertical strips, and third has stripes that swirl together by the back legs in a specific pattern. But even within a species of zebras, no two are exactly alike. Their stripes are as unique t ...

Shorter and stockier than its cousin the horse, the zebra is distinguished by bold, alternating, black (or dark brown) and white stripes. Zebra stripes are like human fingerprints -- no two zebras have the same stripe pattern, which makes it easy for scientists to identify individuals. This makes it possible to study why individual zebras, like individual people, behave differently from one another.
Zebras have been known to spend the entire day eating grass in order to get the nutrition they ...

THE DEVELOPMENT OF ZEBRA STRIPING PATTERNS
Few patterns are more obvious than the alternating black-and-white stripes of the zebra (Figure 1). There are actually three extant species of zebra, and each has a different pattern of stripes. The imperial zebra (Equus grevyi) has some eighty stripes perpendicular to the long axis of its body. The common zebra (E. burchelli) has 26 wide caudal stripes, some of which extend towards the belly in the rear of the animal. The mountain zebra (E. zebr ...

Zebras
The sheer abundance of Zebras we saw while on safari was amazing! They are everywhere! But with their dramatic black and white coloring they make for startling photos against the colors of Africa. The Grevy's Zebra -which may be seen at Lewa Downs-is the rarer of the species and sports smaller stripes that end at it's belly. While the common Zebra has larger stripes that g ...

Zebras'
The distinctive African horse. Known for their striped coats and ability to kick. Well what would you do if hungry lion was climbing up your back? That kick can kill a Hyaena, in one recorded instance it was used by Plains zebras to kill a Wildebeest calf. The calf had become separated from its mother and was likely to attract the attention of a predator with its cries, the execution seemed a kindness.
Zebra numbers are declining as their lands are reduced by human habitation ...
