In 1793 Captain George Vancouver from Great Britain presented the Union Jack to the conquering king Kamehameha I, who was then uniting the islands into a single state; the Union Jack flew unofficially as the flag of Hawaii until 1816. ESTABLISHED:
President Woodrow Wilson signed the country's 13th national park into existence on August 1st, 1916. In 1980, UNESCO named the park an International Biosphere Reserve because of its outstanding scenic and scientific value. The park was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982.
LAND AREA:
About 377 square miles (230,000 acres), with more than 94 percent of the park designated as wilderness.

Akaka Falls:
Akaka Falls is part of an island state park which is located 15 miles north of Hilo, in Honomu, and 4 miles off the Hawai'i Belt Road (Highway 19).
Akaka Falls has a 0.7 mile guided loop through planted botanical forests of gingers, bamboos, orchids, azaleas, tree ferns, hibiscus, and other introduced native species. Midpoint of this loop, there is a fall which is 420 feet high.
