The 162nd New York Volunteer Infantry
3rd Regiment, Metropolitan Guard
"But the two lines came on exultant and sure of victory. The first passed over the knoll and all heedless of the long lines of cannon and crouching forms, of as brave men as ever trod mother earth, pressed on. The second line appeared on the crest and the death signal was sounded. Words cannot describe the awful effects of this discharge of 7000 rifles and several batteries of artillery, each gun loaded to the muzzl ...

The 23rd Missouri Volunteer Infantry
The 23rd Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment (US) never had a unit history published. Many veterans of this distinguished Federal command wrote letters and memoirs but they have never been collected for public view. One veteran, Private John Peter Bagley of Company "I", can even be called the poet laureate of the 23rd for he wrote at least two poems: THE NOBLE TWENTY THIRD and THE DYING SOLDIER. While there are many references to the 23rd Missouri Inf ...
