Castles of Scotland
Scotland has many wonderful old castles and I wish that I could visit each and every one of them. But, since I cannot, then perhaps this is one way to go about at least having a "virtual" visit. Hope you enjoy!

Culzean Castle - information put together as part of my first web page during study for PGdip in IT with the University of Paisley, 1998.
My thanks to the National Trust for Scotland for allowing me to use information and photographs from the Guide Book.
The narrative in these pages is my own interpretation of the information I have personally gathered from a wide range of sources during my time working at Culzean, and is offered purely as such.
It should not therefore be considered as the ...

Devizes Castle Home Page
Welcome to the Devizes Castle Web Site
Devizes Castle in Wiltshire, England stands on the site of a mediaeval 11th century wooden castle.
After the destruction of the wooden castle in 1113, it was rapidly rebuilt in stone by the Viceroy Bishop Roger who spent "great and incalculable sums on it".
This stone castle was destroyed in 1645 when Oliver Cromwell's army bombarded the castle using a battery of guns in the nearby Market Square.

Edinburgh Castle
Edinburgh Castle is visited annually by approximately one million people - if we except the Tower of London that is more people than visit any other ancient monument in the United Kingdom. Every visitor - particularly those on a restricted itinerary - should visit the Castle, not only because of the historical interest of this remarkable fortress and former royal residence, but because it offers such splendid panoramic views of the city. It is from these battlements, ...

Ballencrieff in 1996
Seven centuries in the making...
King Robert the Bruce in 1307 confiscated the lands of Ballencrieff from Henry de Pinkney, Lord of Ballencrieff and Keeper of Berwick Castle, and gifted them to his Esquire, Maurice Murray.
For the next 600 years the Murrays, a famous border family, continuously held the property. In 1507, James IV commanded James Murray (his private secretary) to build himself a ...

Scottish Castles
The early years of Scotland's often troublesome history are partly concealed in the mists of time, and historians are unsure about some of the events which took place. From the beginning of time man's inability to live in peaceful co-existence with his neighbours has led to the need for him to build defences to protect himself and those in his care against a sometimes hostile world. The Scottish countryside is as rich as anywhere in Europe with mighty fortresses and fortified ...

The castle pictures in this site are medium, not high resolution images. The images are taken from frozen frames of a videotape from a Canon A-1 video camera with S-Video output. Higher resolution pictures produce more dramatic pictures, as can be found in "Other castle sites" below. This project, however, is an experiment in low cost, "acceptable-resolution" images.
