Binding Time & Space:
Examining a Renaissance Italian Manuscript in the Computer Age
In this the dawn of the computer age (perhaps it is the early morning--it's difficult to know), I can yet hold a fifteenth-century manuscript in one hand as I reach for the keyboard with the other. I can examine the craftsmanship, feel the texture, and then I can type in an attempt to suggest why and how information was stored in this outmoded fashion. There is history attached to this text; it str ...

Bookbinding Model Collection
University of Iowa Libraries
Where did the idea come from?
Bill Anthony, past Conservator of the University of Iowa Libraries, was known for his replicas or models of historical bindings. He used model making projects to teach skills of the bookbinding craft and many of his models and those of his apprentices were included in the 1985 exhibit - "The Art and Craft of Bookbinding". These models have been preserved in the Conser ...

Bookmaking: a single-signature pamphlet
Making a simple book is fun and rewarding. Beautiful books can be created using this simple technique. The following directions describe how to make a single signature book using pamphlet binding, one of the simplest ways to bind sheets of paper. As part of this type of workshop, participants can also learn the parts of a book, and some of the history of books.
The basic pamphlet uses 3 holes to sew through, but if the book is large, 5 or 7 holes can be ...

Five-stitch Bookbinding
This is a 15-minute to half hour project to make a miniature blank book ideal for keeping in a purse or pocket for jotting down a note, address, or phone number, or for sending through the mail as a slam book; but it's elegant enough that you'll smile every time you use it and remember that you made it.
Here are a couple that I made:
The pictures above are about life size on my monitor. The tan book is 2 7/8 x 3 1/2 inches and the gray one is 3 x 4 inches.
