Educational Resource Guide #2
Termite Infestation, Damage and Control
Barb Ogg, Extension Educator
Subterranean termites are destructive wood-eating insects and cause home-owners frustration and expense when active nests are found in their houses. This can be especially troublesome when selling a home because lending institutions (banks, savings and loans, FHA, VA) require houses certified to be termite free before lending money to home buyers. Presence of an old infestation or dama ...

Termite World
by Chris W.
Termite is a common name for a group of insects that live in communities like ants do. Termites are closely related to cockroaches and grasshoppers. There are three groups in most termite colonies. Some reproduce, some are workers, and some are soldiers. They are dark colored, have eyes, fairly hard bodies and fully developed wings. Each colony of termites has a king and a queen. Every mature colony develops young winged termites that leave the nest, search for food and water for the colony, and build tunnels. The soldiers ,which are also wingless and blind, are larger than workers. They have enormous hard heads, powerful jaws, and strong legs.

Eastern Subterranean Termites
Termites are a social insect that lives in large colonies. King and Queen termites have been known to live as long as 25 years. Swarming can occur after the colony reaches a certain size (After 2-3 years or 4-6 years, researchers tend to disagree over this.) When conditions are favorable, usually on warm or humid days, the colony can send out im ...

Termites, the insects most feared by homeowners, are often called "white ants" because of their similar size, social structure and tendency to infest homes. But termites are not related to ants; they have closer ties to the cockroach. Termites are social insects and their colonies operate on a caste system, which includes a king, queen, workers and soldiers. The queen is considerably larger than her subjects and can lay 30,000 eggs a day for up to 15 years.

Termites
Termites are small, ant-like insects. However, they differ from ants in that they feed off the cellulose in wood. Working largely unseen under the surface, they can tunnel through the wooden structural members in buildings and completely destroy them. Wood that comes in contact with the soil, such as the exterior trim or cladding on your home, provides a perfect point of entry for a termite colony.

Termites
These are found on the forest floor, feeding on dead plants. They build large mounds, shaped like towers which they live in.
They provide a source of food for many rainforest animals such as frogs, lizards and anteaters.
Termites are good for the forests as they feed on the dead vegetable matter on the floor which is recycled to provide nutrients for the living plants.
"On September 9, 1987, a satellite picture of the Amazon River Basin showed a total of 7,603 fires burning in the rainforest."

If you live in the United States, you live under the constant threat of costly damage caused by wood-destroying bugs. Identifying and understanding the behavior of these pests is the first step in creating an effective pest control plan.
Carpenter ants and termites are wood-destroying insects that cost us billions of dollars every year. More than 90% of the homes in the US are wood framed. But even homes built of masonry and steel serve up delicious wood treats to these pests. Left unchecked, they systematically destroy our homes and valuable wood objects in them.

Termites are pests because they feed voraciously on wood and may also destroy paper products such as books, cardboard, boxes and a variety of other items. Termites
A termite is a name given to numerous species of social insects that can damage wooden structures. Most of the about 2000 known species are distributed in the tropical countries. Some inhabit the temperate regions of North and South America, while only two species have established in southern Europe. Termites are also known as white ants, based on similarities in the appearance and habits of these insects. Although true ants belong to a more advanced insect order that includes the bees and the wasps, termites have developed patterns that are almost as complicated as those of the ants, bees, and wasps. Termites display patterns of social behavior that are almost as so as those of the ants, social bees, and wasps.

A termite is sometimes called a white ant but really isn't. They may look similar to an ant but if you look closely they really aren't. But they both live in colonies whose members are organized in to castes.
Termites are blind and the wingless workers use the sense of smell, taste, and touch to explore. They collect food for themselves and the other castes. The workers may seem handicapped, but are responsible for maintaining and constructing the homes.

TERMITES
The queen termite looks like a giant sausage. The queen is the largest termite of the nest. Her body is bloated and is full of eggs.
Termites build their nests to fit in with their surroundings. The termites plaster their nests to trees. The umbrella nest is good for heavy rainfalls!
The queen termite will lay 30 000 eggs a day. That is 3 eggs every 3 seconds.
The nests are well organised and each termite has a special job to do. Not all termites look the same, it depends on which job they do.

Termites
(Insecta: Isoptera)
General Information:
Termites are one type of the more primitive types of insects and are closely related to cockroaches. They feed on all types of wood (even treated) because they carry protozoa (small animals) within their stomach which can digest the cellulose in wood. Baby termites (larvae) do not have the ability to digest wood and must acquire the protozoa by feeding on the droppings of the adults.

The eastern subterranean termite (EST) is the most damaging urban pest, costing more than $1 billion annually for control and repair to damaged structures. Difficulty in controlling termites is largely due to their social nature (i.e., they live in colonies). Aerial infestations with no ground connection are also known to occur, provided adequate food and m ...
