The emblem of Western Australia, it is found through most areas of Australia. Most lakes and inlets have their own population of black swans. The young are called cygnets and are soft, fluffy and grey. The parent birds are very defensive of them. They are a very beautiful bird, but will attack people.

Mute Swans
Beautiful but Controversial Birds
Story and Photographs by Larry J. Hindman
Mute swans have been cherished as symbols of purity and elegance for centuries. Native to Europe and Asia, they were transported to North America in the late nineteenth century by European immigrants. Some swans eventually escaped or were deliberately released into the wild.
Public opinion about mute swans is mixed. They are very large birds, measuring 56-62 inches in length. With little or no fear ...

The City Naturalist - Mute Swan
Article and Photos by Leslie Day

Some people believe that the Mute Swan may have first been introduced on the large estates ...

THE MIGRATORY BIRD PROJECT:
RESTORING TRUMPETER SWANS TO THE EAST
BACKGROUND

Present throughout the continental United States, Alaska and much of Canada for tens of thousands of years, these majestic birds disappeared from many habitats soon after European colonization of the Americas.
Although the destruction of ...
