IN their archeological digs through the strata of human language, linguists have long been fascinated by the seeming similarities between the English words "fist," "finger" and "five." The motif is repeated by the Dutch, who say "vuist," "vinger" and "vijf," and ...

Introduction to Historical Linguistics
Historical linguistics is the study of not only the history of languages, as the name implies, but also the study of how languages change, and how languages are related to one another. It might seem at first that this would be a rather dull, uneventful field of study, but that is far from the truth. Historical linguistics is full of lively debate and controversy (I'll point out controvercial things when they come), and occasionally some nasty words are ...

Genetic Distance and Language Affinities Between Autochthonous Human Populations
The first two of the following tables was originally drawn from one article in Scientific American, "Genes, peoples and languages," by Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza (November, 1991). This reported the results of genetic mapping of human DNA affinities, the newest theories about larger families of human languages, and a comparison between the two. While this was a thrilling prospect for understanding the early ...

GROWTH POINTS IN THINKING-FOR-SPEAKING
David McNeill and Susan D. Duncan
1. INTRODUCTION
Many bilingual speakers believe they engage in different forms of thinking when they shift languages. This experience of entering different thought worlds can be explained with the hypothesis that languages induce different forms of `thinking-for-speaking'-- thinking generated, as Slobin (1987) says, because of ...

LANGUAGE LEARNING AS COMPRESSION
There is good evidence that the way a child learns his or her first language may, in large measure, be understood as information compression. The principle of "Minimum Length Encoding" (MLE), "Minimum Description Length" (MDL) or "Minimum Message Length" (MML) encoding which has been pursued in other research on grammatical inference appears to be highly relevant to understanding language learn ...

The instrumental analysis is performed using one or many of the available instruments. These include X-ray photography ...
