The Oregon Trail, approximately 2,000 miles, was the longest of the great overland routes used in the westward expansion of the United States. By the mid-1800's, thousands of pioneers traveled along the trail from Independence, Mo., to the Pacific Northwest. Other pioneers, attracted by gold in California, turned off near Fort Hall and followed the California Trail.
