BIOMES OF THE WORLD
Ms. Wayne
Science
Scientists have classified areas with similar climates, plants, and animals into divisions called biomes. Because biomes divisions are merely a system to help scientists describe the natural world, not all scientists agree on the kinds and numbers of biomes. However, most scientists accepts at least six land biomes and two water biomes. The major land biomes are tundra, coniferous forest, deciduous forest, tropical rain forest, grassland, and ...

For The Classroom
Plant growth is essential in the tundra environment, as plants are the primary food source for the rest of the consumers in the food chain. Plant growth and decomposition are constrained by the comparatively small amount of light and heat and by the very short but intense growing season. These limiting factors affect the ability of wildlife and plants to reproduce successfully and to maintain their populations over time.
The following activities demonstrate the effects of t ...

Pre-field Trip Activities
Environmental Ecosystems and Biospheres
Depending on the community you live in, students may have pre-conceived notions concerning many things in our environment. During our electronic field trip we will have the opportunity to view many majestic forests as well as forests which have been ravaged by insects, fire, or weather. Having your students prepared in advance to look at human versus nature in a forest will allow them the opportunity to "questions the experts".
Select the following pre-field trip lesson plans for your appropriate grade level:
K-2, 3-5 'Singing for Wilderness'
K-2, 'Create a Food Chain'
3-5, 'Create a Food Chain'
6-8, 9-12 'Common Ground'

Prairie Populations
Grade 11 Science/Math
Lesson Introduction
To study the population of a species in an area or to assess the biodiversity of an area, biologists must figure out how many individuals the area supports. One way would be to count each one. That might take a long time, but the result would be precise. This approach may be unrealistic if the area is very large, say a 5000-acre prairie, or if the individuals of the species are too numerous, like the grass in the school y ...
