Information on Problem Woodchucks
If you are a gardener, whether you grow vegetables or flowers, you must be familiar with our local woodchucks. Unlike a rabbit, who will nibble at your plants, a woodchuck totally destroys them. Some people have commented that it looked like a lawnmower went through the garden or flower bed. The picture below should give you an idea of what they look like. People also call them gopher, groundhog, and, occasionally, I have heard pe ...

Marmot
Marmots live in large colonies, excavating deep burrows in which they hibernate during winter. As many as 10 to 15 closely-packed animals crowd together in a single, carefully lined burrow. During summer, they feed outside their burrows and give loud whistles when sighting an intruder. (They have sentinels and thus a well structured community.) The Himalayan marmot is about 2 feet long with a 5 inch tail.

Karamjeet Singh's Himalayan Home
In the high alpine meadows between ten and fourteen thousand feet, are found the Himalayan Marmots. About the size of a large housecat, they live colonially and are fairly thick on the ground in the Upper Suru valley, from Ringdom Gompa, all the way across the Pensi pass and into Zanskar. We came up with some Snow Leopard pug marks in the same area - plump marmot must be an important part of his diet..

The Woodchuck, Groundhog or North American marmot (Marmota monax). A more detailed taxonomical classification of the woodchuck is given at the bottom.
Woodchucks have been known to forage arboreally.
An old American legend purports that woodchucks emerge from hibernation on Groundhog day (Candlemass Day, February 2nd). If it sees its shadow, it returns to its burrow to hibernate six more weeks. In Europe, a similar tradition assigns this role to the bear and the badger, marking th ...

WOODCHUCK
(GROUNDHOG)
The woodchuck, which inhabits most of North America, in the South is more familiarly known as a groundhog. This name is well taken because of the vast subterranean burrows that it digs and lives in. Each burrow consists of several rooms with sleeping area located at the highest elevation and small chambers below serving for hibernation or toilet facilities. The toilet rooms are cleaned regularly and the wastes taken to the surface and buried. Deserted groundhog dens a ...
