Welcome to the basics class. In our first lesson today, we'll discuss the electrical system and how it ties in with everything else. To start a car, the driver puts the key into the ignition lock and turns it. This closes a switch which allows electricity to flow from the battery through wires to the electrical starter motor, which starts the engine. This is called the ignition system. There are two main kinds of automobile engines, the piston engine and the rotary engine. Both are internal-combustion engines, which means that fuel is burned inside the engine. In a piston engine, exploding fuel pushes the pistons up and down inside the cylinders and that up-and-down movement turns the shaft. Most cars on the road today have piston engines. Diesel engines are piston engines, too.
