CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIA--ACID/BASE
Acid/base problems may fall into 4 categories: strong acid/base, weak acid/base, buffers and hydrolysis. We will go through examples of each of these types of problems one at a time.
Strong Acids and Strong Bases
The strength of the acid is determined by how far the equilibrium lies to the right. Qualitatively, this may be judged by the Ka of the acid. A large Ka indicates a strong acid; a small Ka indicates a weak acid. Strong acids, such as HCl, have K ...

A recipe calculator for thermodynamically correct buffers for pH control
Welcome
Introduction
This web site is purely designed for the calculation of thermodynamically correct recipes for the control of pH in aqueous biological systems. There's a little bit of a tutorial, and some background here too. We all use buffers for pH control, and I worry that in these days of protocols and recipes, we're losing the ability to appreciate what we do when we set ...

pH IN PLAIN LANGUAGE
To understand and learn about pH measurements is not difficult as long as we stick to fundamentals. That is, let us be concerned with the question, "What is the pH of my solution?", and then we can think of the instruments and techniques as tools to help us get the answer.
In plain language we'll discuss what pH means, why it is important and the results that you may expect to get from reading this paper.
If you can study this paper and at the same time have an operating ...

Solving an acid base problem
(by looking at it and thinking about what happens)
This problem set was developed by S.E. Van Bramer for Chemistry 145 at Widener University.
Identify Each Species.
First identify each species and decide what it will do in water
Is it a strong acid? If yes, it will completely dissociate in water. Since it is the ions that do the chemistry, write them as ions. example:
HCl + H2O -> H3O1+ + Cl1-
Since it is a strong acid it dissociates completely, you wil ...
