Welcome to the UCSD Levantine Archaeology in the Levant website. The site focuses on archaeological investigations in the southern Levant. Our research aims center on the evolution of societies in the southern Levant from the Neolithic period to the Iron Age. Most of the data we analyze comes from our excavations in Jordan and Israel. However, some exciting contemporary ethnoarchaeology work is being done in India to help build models for the past.

Dr. ANDREW GARRARD
The Near East lies at the "bridgehead" between Africa, Europe and Asia, however our knowledge of the Palaeolithic period is still very limited. Much of the information relating to the colonisation and behaviour of early hominid and later hunter- gatherer populations stems from field studies undertaken in the central and southern Levant.
