The beaver population was almost wiped out by 1930, but conservation measures have since restored their numbers to relatively healthy levels.

BEAVERS
There are 2 species of beaver and both lead semi-aquatic lives.
The Eurasian beaver, is the largest European rodent.
Male and female beavers look alike, but males tend to have larger scent glands. These glands produce a musky-smelling secretion, probably used for marking territory boundaries.
The beaver's hind feet are webbed like a duck's making it a powerful swimmer. The animal cuts down trees with its strong front teeth and trims off branches to build its island home.
Beavers have built a dam 600m (1968 ft) across.
Fossils have been found of beavers that 2m (6.5ft) long but the average beaver today is only about 75cm (30 in) long.
Beavers are able to stay under water for up to 15 minutes.
