Sgt. Leatherback says...
"Straighten up and pay attention, lives depend on this!"
Marine turtles everywhere are dying needlessly because of things people do.
We kill them for their shells. We kill them for their meat. We make soup from them.
We kill them with our appetite for shrimp, because most shrimp is caught using nets that trap and drown turtles. Yes, turtles can drown.
We steal their eggs by the thousands.
We build condominiums right next to their nesting sites, and then we fl ...

Box Turtle Observation Project
For several years, I have been rescuing box turtles from Washington County roadways. Most of them are immediately released to the far side of the road; but, in several cases, I have kept the turtles for longer-term observation. Since I'm an entomologist, not a herpetologist (Jim!), the observations I record here will be somewhat less scientific than one might expect in Copeia, but more scientific than most of what I have seen on the web. I want to caution yo ...

Diving With Sea Turtles
Since 1989 we have been spending our summers with the same group of Hawaiian green sea turtles. Considering how large their ocean is, it is no small miracle that we can fly from Toronto to Maui and count on the same individuals being in the very same place year after year.
We are, of course, grateful for this. It would not be possible for us to dive over large portions of ocean searching for them. All we need do is go to the Turtle House. Each day they are simply there ...

SEA TURTLES
Sea turtles are graceful saltwater reptiles, well adapted to life in their marine world. With streamlined bodies and flipper-like limbs, they are able to swim long distances in a relatively short time.
When they are active, sea turtles must swim to the ocean surface to breathe every few minutes. When they are resting, they can remain underwater for as long as 2 hours without breathing.
Although sea turtles live most of their lives in the ocean, adult females must return to land ...

Radiated tortoiseGeochelone radiata
General Information
The radiated tortoise has a high domed shell with flat top pyramids on his shell. The purpose of these is believed to help protect the tortoise and maybe to help him get back on his ventral side if he accidently tipped on his dorsal side. It has a blunt head and elephant feet to help support its body weight. Its legs, feet and head are yellow, except for a variably sized black patch on top of its head. Th ...

The Radiated Tortoise
David T. Kirkpatrick, Ph.D
Turtles and tortoises come in an almost overwhelming variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. Among the most distinctive and beautiful are those tortoises which have a "star" or "radiating" pattern on their carapace, and many people believe that of these, the rare Radiated Tortoise, Geochelone radiata, is the most distinguished. Including the Radiated tortoise, seven species of tortoise have similar markings: the Geometric tortoise [Psammobates ...

Dr. Dave Nelson of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Waterways Experiment Station, Vicksburg, Mississippi, has been in Tampa Bay to study the behavior of sea turtles. The study is part of a year long effort to determine the movements of the turtles in and around the Bay, their behavior, and migration in the Gulf of Mexico. The results will be used to help protect sea turtles during the Corps’ annual maintenance dredging in the Bay.

Cleaners Feeding From Turtles
Here you can see two of the three most common cleaner species in action. Goldring surgeons (Ctenochaetus strigosus) are algae grazers and usually feed on growth on the carapace, but it is not uncommon to see them graze on tumors as well.
The saddleback wrasse (Thalassoma duperrey) is a scavenger with a sharp bite that is frequently directed at the turtle's eyes, as seen here. This bite, unlike the grazing scrape of the goldring surgeon, is often painful enough ...
