TEN RULES FOR BETTER SPELLING
1. Take Your Words Apart
Break down your words into their component parts. For example, look at the synonym for “rivalry,” which is “competition.” Why is it spelled “competition” rather than “compitition?”
A competition is a petition of two or more people for the same thing; they seek the same objective. You get the correct spelling by dividing the word into its two parts: com-petition.

Regular Plural Nouns
Most nouns in English are made into plural nouns by adding an s to the singular form. If the noun ends with an s, ch, sh, or x, an es is added to make the noun plural.
The underlined noun in each sentence is spelled in its singular form. Write the correct plural form after the sentence. The first one is done for you.

Spelling
Spell checkers will catch some kinds of errors, but not all. For example, they tend to miss homonyms -- words which are pronounced the same way but spelled differently, such as site/ sight, there/ their/ they're, and its/ it's. Most spell-checkers, for example, would report no error in the following sentence, despite the fact that there are three serious spelling mistakes:

Spelling Tips
Problem: Your child waited to study until the night before the test.
Information: On spelling tests, easy words count as much as hard ones do. Take advantage of this fact!
Solution: "Damage control"
Since all words will count equally on the test, your child should study the easiest words, not the hardest. Let her choose which words to study. She is the best judge of which ones are easiest for her.
