Vitiligo
by Ron Kennedy, M.D., Santa Rosa, California
Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin disease. Autoimmune disorders are caused when the body's immune system, which is meant to defend the body against bacteria, viruses, and any other foreign product, malfunctions and produces antibodies against healthy tissue, cells and organs. In vitiligo, the autoantibody is directed against melanocytes in the skin.
In vitiligo the absence of melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) causes a decreased pigment ...

I have created this web site for others who have Vitiligo and/or Alopecia Areata (AA), and for those who have family or friends with Vitiligo or Alopecia. I'd like to share my knowledge and experiences with you, and it is my hope that you will find it both useful and encouraging. Remember that I´m not an expert, I haven't tried every cure I´m describing. Don't try anything without checking with a physician.
Thanks Diana for your help with the English.
Vitiligo and AA have several similar ...

Vitiligo is a disfiguring medical disease whose cause is unknown. The disease causes destruction or loss of function of melanocytes in the skin, mucous membranes, eyes, inner ear, and occasionally in hair bulbs. Melanocytes produce the pigment that gives skin its color. The loss of melanocytes alters both the structure and function of these organs and results in the absence of pigment.

Vitiligo
What Is Vitiligo?
Vitiligo (vit-ill-eye-go) is a pigmentation disorder in which melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) in the skin, the tissues that line the inside of the mouth and nose and genital and rectal areas (mucous membranes), and the retina of the eyes are destroyed. As a result, white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body. The hair that grows in areas affected by vitiligo may turn white. The cause of vitiligo is not known, but doctors and researchers ha ...
