A Brief History of Weather Vanes
The history of weather vanes is an interesting one which spans many centuries and travels over many countries.
The earliest recorded weather vane honored the Greek god Triton, and adorned the Tower of the Winds in Athens which was built by the astronomer Andronicus in 48 B.C. The figure, which is believed to have been 4 to 8 feet long, had the head and torso of a man and the tail of a fish. To the ancients, the winds had divine powers. In Greece and pre-Chris ...

Arctic Upper-Air Meteorological Data Page
Since 1989, I've been involved in projects to "rescue" historical meteorological measurements in Arctic regions. These data are primarily upper-air observations. This page contains a variety of information concerning these and other Arctic, meteorology-related activities. Comments are welcome, and should be directed to Jon Kahl at kahl@uwm.edu.

METEOROLOGY - A BRIEF HISTORY:
Meteorology - The study of the atmosphere and its phenomena.
As with most physical sciences, it is nearly impossible to determine an exact "beginning" for the science of meteorology. A distinction must be made between meteorology as a science and meteorology as a "branch of knowledge". As farmers and hunters, early man was strongly dependent upon atmospheric conditions for his existence. Although he could not adequately explain many atmospheric phenomena (a ...

The Winter of 1620-'21
Copyright © 1996-2006 STORMFAX, Inc.
The decision of the Pilgrims to land on the shores of Massachusetts was dictated by the weather. At the time the Mayflower was passing the southeastern tip of Cape Cod, the wind and waves prompted the crew to make landfall out of danger rather than proceed to their planned destination at New York Harbor.
The small 180-ton ship passed the central headland of Cape Cod near Nauset soon after daybreak on November 19, 1620, but fou ...

Hurricane Luis: September 1995
Summary: bad storm, lots of damage, no one killed, no one seriously hurt, fast recovery. Due to the incredible effort of everyone on the island, Anguilla was back to normal before Christmas.
After the hurricane we didn't have current or telephone at home, but we still had Internet service in The Valley. So I started answering people's e-mail questions by posting the answers to my "Luis" web page.

Galveston, Texas, awakened on September 8, 1900, on its way to becoming the most prosperous city in the nation, brimming with activity, commerce, and confidence. The following morning, it was a city decimated and humbled by nature, its businesses and homes unrecognizable, its hope swept away by what is still the deadliest weather disaster in American history.
At the turn of the century, Isa ...
