HAIL FALL

unless otherwise indicated.
In The Wake Of The Storm
Experienced chasers know not to get in the wake of an old supercell. Swinging wide to the south side before making a run for the inflow area will save time in the long run. Early spring storms riding on a 150 knot jet stream will speed away leaving chasers spinning in the ice. Hard hail, unlike snow is like trying to drive on ball bearings. Much of this and the chase is over. This imag ...

unless otherwise indicated.
Batter Up!
This large hailstone fell from a tornadic supercell northeast of Breckenridge, TX. The stones left a path miles wide littered with three to four and one half inch stones. The hail fell from a dark cloud base to the south of a developing mesocyclone. No rain or thunder occurred in the immediate area while the stones were coming down.Further to the northeast more large stones fell blocking chase crews ...

Hailstorms, Do They Look Different?
Typical Hailstorm...Or Is It?
A severe thunderstorm rolling across the western prairie. This storm blasted windows out of a town in western Oklahoma with golf ball size hail and 70 m.p.h. winds. The worst of the hail was under the dark shelf of clouds close to the ground. Cold temperatures cause clouds to become lower to the ground. With the typical blue-greenish cast it's common knowledge this is what hailstorms are expected to look like. Actually, it cou ...

Imagine that you wake up one morning during the winter and find that a huge blizzard hit your neighborhood overnight. Snow has collected into huge drifts that reach halfway up your house. The streets have drifts that are as tall as an NBA player. All of your doors have frozen shut, and it will take days for you to dig out your car. How will you survive until someone can free you from your house?
Preparing for a disaster is just as important as knowing what to do during a disaster. This se ...

Imagine that you're a contestant on Jeopardy. With one more right answer you can win the game. You've bet all of your money on the final question about Natural Disasters. The answer reads, "This disaster can be so powerful that it will cause the surface of the ground to have waves like it was water,". What is the right question?
Knowing about natural disasters can be useful for more than just trivia games. Are a hurricane's winds as strong as a tornado's? What's the most dangerous thing a ...

What is "Tornado Alley"?
Areas with the greatest incidence of tornadoes
Click on image for full size (19K JPEG)
The land in the central United States is the best breeding ground for the storms which produce tornadoes. The land in the Great Plains is relatively flat, which allows cold dry polar air from Canada to meet warm moist tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico. It's along the f ...

What Exactly Is a Tornado?
A tornado is a violently rotating column of air between a cloud and Earth, touching both. When conditions are right, a thunderstorm can spin out one or more tornadoes. There must be moisture in the low to middle levels of the atmosphere, air that is rising from the ground and strong enough to keep rising, and a "lifting force" that causes the air to begin rising. (This happens when air near the ground is warmed.)
As air rises, it cools, and the moistu ...

Tornadoes

Tornadoes form from severe thunderstorms. They are very destructive because they have a high energy density. They also don't last very long. This makes it hard to learn about them. Since scientists don't know much about tornadoes, it's also hard to forecast them. And because little is known about tornadoes, there are many myths about them which aren't tru ...

Typical "wedge tornado" is straight on the sides not funnel shaped and has a wide damage path. It's usually as wide, or wider than it is tall. These monsters are not necessarily stronger than funnels or other shaped tornadoes, but they do cover much more ground. This particular tornado was hanging out the west side of a supe ...

violently rotating columns of air
A tornado is defined as a violently rotating column of air in contact with the ground and pendent from a cumulonimbus cloud.
Photograph by: Marshall
They can be categorized as "weak", "strong", and "violent"; with weak tornadoes often having a thin, rope-like appearance, as exhibited by this tornado near Dawn, Texas. About 7 in 10 tornadoes are weak, with rotating wind speeds no greater than about 110 MPH. (looking west from abou ...
