HUMBOLDT PENGUIN
Remaining Population: Unknown
Range: Southern Oceans
People seem to love penguins, probably because they resemble comical people with their upright stance and waddling gait. There is also a certain fascination that these flightless birds can survive in some of the coldest and most inhospitable places on Earth.
Ranging in size from the nearly 4 foot (1.2 m) tall emporer to the tiny 3 pound (1 kg) little blue, all of the world's 18 s ...

Penguin Adaptation
Penguins are designed for life in the sea. Some species spend as much as 75% of their lives in the water. (They lay their eggs and to raise their chicks on land.) Heavy, solid bones act like a diver's weight belt, allowing them to stay underwater. Their wings, shaped like flippers, help them "fly" underwater at speeds up to 15 mph. A streamlined body, paddle-like feet, insulating blubber, and watertight feathers all add to their efficiency and comfort underwater. They ...

The thought of penguins brings to mind images of "tuxedo-clad" flightless birds standing on the Antarctic ice. But there are penguins at the Equator on the Galapagos; those inhabiting islets off w. South America and feeding in the rich Peru Current are the Humboldt Penguins (left). Penguins are so different from other birds that the 17 closely-related species form their own order, the S ...
